Tesco Bread Flour

  • In our Asda on Friday it was 78p for white bread flour  which is where it's been for at least three weeks IIRC

Ouch - I'm in Essex and we bought 8 bags at the 48p price this morning. On the plus point, Mr T's diesel was down to 97.9 earlier on which was nice. It had dropped a penny since yesterday.

It's all part of tescos 'discount brands' thingy.

Ie repackage the value stuff and add on 20-30%

Just upgrade you shopping to aldi and be done with it.
Fine if you have such a shop nearby! Some of us only have Tesco, Lidl or the Coop!

And some of us only have Tesco and the Co-op - oh to have a Lidl.....
  • And up in the Hebrides they only have the co-op (Co-Operative as it's known there) and a couple of independant supermarkets across the lower chain of Islands.Tesco have JUST (Inside the past year) moved into Stornoway which is the main town on the Northern chain. Where we stay when we're up there our nearest shop full stop is a little post office-come-local store which is a 10 mile round trip. The nearest supermarket is close to 40 mile round trip. You just get used to it - as you get used to the prices being a huge amount higher also. No Lidl, Aldi or Netto up there - you pay what you have to pay, or club together with neighbours on an occasional basis to make the journey to the mainland with a car or van to stock up on basics. That has to be a big enough shop to make it worthwhile though with ferry fares etc to pay....

To give an idea - and also some background to the reason why I've posted as I have there - when we were there last March Diesel was 25% higher than on the mainland. A free range chicken - rarely obtainable anyway - was about 20% more. A small Bag of pasta cost in the region of £0.99 and a tin of tomatoes about £0.50p Very little in the way of "value" or "basics" ranges, and add to that the fact that income is lower as well....... Having said all that, I don't find Lidl a viable option for my regular shop - there are bits and bobs I know I can get in there - Parmesan cheese, tomato puree - both far far better than Tesco equivalents and cheaper to boot. I don't buy meat in the supermarket anyway so comparisons there are pointless, but I don't find Lidl even begin to compare with Tersco on things like fresh veg and fruit (nearly all imported). Bottom line - I'm lucky enough to be able to shop around to an extent - we have Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys all in the town here as well as Lidl. I don't necessarily have the TIME to devote to trwaling round four different stores though, which is why I would like to be able to "trust" (poor choice of words I know but you know what I mean) my store opf choice not to be ripping me off each and every time my back is turned!

  • Indeed - EssexHebridean, that's where I am!

RET's made a bit of a difference to the ferry fares :) thankfully. We're still paying on average 12p a litre more for petrol and diesel, there was more than a 20p difference during the summer though. Petrol in Stornoway has fallen below £1 for the first time in over 2 years.

Tesco in Stornoway started off charging "mainland" prices when it opened in July 2008, but now I'm not so sure....
  • Whereabouts are you Nesssie? Lewis I assume? I couldn't believe the difference in fares once the RET kicked in - lets just hope it continues on once the trial is done. It'll mean the two of us plus car doing the return journey for the same as it used to cost us one way which makes a good difference to our budget, but somehow makes the short hop from Berneray > Leverburgh seem extortionate! :rotfl: Good news about your petrol / diesel prices too - as a rule the Uists are a few pence more than Stornoway prices so I'd guess they haven't broken back through the £1/litre barrier quite yet.

Not surprised about Tesco I'm afraid - at the very least Somerfield did offer a better priced alternative up there and kept the Co-Ops on their toes - if there is effectively price-fixing between the stores then there will be no incentive.

Wonder if RET will also come over to Orkney ? Apparently Shetland would be no better off with it, so I heard, but not sure about here. We pay approx £100 (depending on season) return car and two adults on the boat (with islander discount)- it will be more when DS is no longer a free infant, and of course tourists here pay more as no islander discount.
We too have only just got Tesco (was Somerfield), and got Lidl a couple of years ago. We also have 3 Coops of varying sizes and lots of local shops. I knew when I moved here that shop choice was limited but am glad we have such good local produce like meat, cheese, milk etc, as I also like to shop locally instead of high air mile cheap stuff from Lidl etc. Is the Stornoway black pudding any good ? Saw some in Kirkwall and wondered!
Not sure what I think of Tesco yet- better than Somerfield but I really preferred it when it was Morrisons (since I have been here its been Safeway, Morrisons, Somerfield now Tesco!- apparently was Presto once too!).

RET's been interesting, just hope that it continues after the pilot scheme and also gets rolled out to some of the other Scottish Islands.

The Tesco/Somerfield/Morrisons/Safeway/Presto would have been a Liptons before all the other name changes!

Stornoway Black Pudding is lovely, it's not nearly as spicy as mainland black puddings. I love it with scallops or as a "stuffing" for portobello mushrooms.
  • Yum yum yum - Stornoway black pudding!! Charles McLeod is the make most readily available elsewhere I think (He markets his as the "original" although whether that is the case I have no idea!) and is truly delicious - we have some sitting in our freezer as I speak! Must try it as a mushroom stuffing though - actually it would make good ravioli with a rich tomato sauce too....

Nesssie - assuming it does continue then I would think the Berneray/Harris crossing would be a prime target for the RET as it's so well used by the islanders themselves - and the existing fares are quite steep for the length of trip. RET would make a massive difference! I can just remember Stornoway Tesco as a Safeway, but don't go back any further than that I'm afraid!

Anyway - to get back on topic - how much DO you pay for bread flour up there?! :rotfl:
