Debtfreein4years -I didn't realise that, I will give it a try. Is it the same for both brown and white flour?
  • Im not to sure what the protein content for brown flour is. ive listed what the book says (well sumed it up)

wheat based flour - bread supposedly is better using a flour with a protein content of 10.5%

Plain white flour - has a protein content of 9.5% - 10% (this is what i use)

    white bread flour - protein content of 12 % - 14%

plain wholemeal flour - doesnt state the protein content, but says its not high enough for bread making (i would try it and make up your own mind)

wholemeal bread flour - again most have a protein content around 12.5%

ive tried both white flour and strong white flour (bread flour) and personally havent noticed any difference.

  • The only way to get companies like Tescos to play the game is to hit them in their pocket, I went to Tesco about 3mths ago and was disgusted at their price rises, I got half way through my shop, walked up to the till, parked my trolley and said "put that lot back please I`me going to Asda" and walked out. Haven`t been back since. I will do the same to Asda if they go to far (close) then go to Lidle. While people moan but carry on shopping there Tesco will continue to take the pee. I will pay more in traveling just so I don`t give them my hard earned.
  • Ouch - that's a stinger. Well I shall look at Asda tomorrow to see how their prices compare locally - after that it's in to Lidl for the bread flour if Asda don't shape up...... we know from till spits and CC extra vouchers that they DO notice when we stop buying things from Tesco so if enough people take the stand it might make them think. My Supermarket still have ASDA at 48p so I think a stock-up in there might be coming on.

Lidl bread flour is superb, very very high quality, makes fantastic bread (good mixed with wholemeal for a half and half) and cheap. It's right on the top of the list of things that Lidl is good for.

It is all a con by Tesco, ASDA did the same thing a few months back, now they can legally sell it at "reduced" price of 47P, which is what it was before they hiked the price up for 30 days

Tesco will no doubt do the same thing having seen ASDA do it

Like others I use the Lidl one anyway

  • I'm really hoping that once Christmas is over value prices will go back to normal. All of the big three (Messrs A, S & T) hiked their value prices for flour, dried fruit and I'm sure lots of other things from the start of the Christmas promotions. I'm going to do much more stockpiling in the future so that I can buy things at the price I want and then not buy them when things are expensive.

  • Asda and Lidl both still at 48p today. Chopped toms seem to have gone up across the board though - even in Lidl today they were 33p a can.

In our Asda on Friday it was 78p for white bread flour  which is where it's been for at least three weeks IIRC
