There are several virtual brands with cheap int'l calls - Globalcell, IDT, Lebara, Lycamobile, Mobile World, and most of the main networks now have add-ons or other options for cheap int'l calls, e.g. Orange Camel or O2's International Caller
There is also a callthrough service called Yourcallworld which has an arrangement on T-mobile, 3p to landlines, and could be used cheaply on one or two others if you happen to be calling Irish mobiles.
For texts, the Irish networks offer up to 250 free texts a month to their subscribers when logged in on their websites, so you might get a SIM sent to you. Vodafone and Meteor's messages are to the same network, while O2's are to anywhere; 3 I don't know
Or there are some mobile Java programs which send an equivalent using the phone's data connection, and cost from a penny or two per message, pluss about half a penny to the network for the data. Some are Fishtext smsbug and Vyke; you can find more about these by searching the forum0 -
I have a vodafone.ie sim card already, it's still 29 cents a text though so actually more expensive...free to recieve a call and 29 cents per minute to call.
Best I've found so far is o2. I paid 4.99 and got an international pack and texts are then 10p each. Calls are still quite expensive but I can get OH to ring me if it's free to recieve on my Irish sim0 -
As "redux" says be sure to register your Vodafone Ireland SIM for free web texts.

With ADSA Mobile Texts to Ireland are 20p and Phone calls to both Landlines and Mobiles are 20p per minute.
UK Rates are cheap too.0 -
Might be worth getting either a Lebara or Lycamobile SIM - both are offering £30 credit for a £20 spend - their normal text price is 10p but this becomes 6.7p when you factor in the free 50%.
Their calls are 15p a minute to mobiles and 4p to l/lines - again factor in 50% free becomes 10p and 2.7p.
The 50% free offer is till the 5th Jan. Lyca offer free texts as well to the 5th Jan.
Lyca operates on the Orange network and Lebara on the Vodafone network.0
