Turkey or turkey crown? (Got bones?)

Planning to be at Somerfield early tomorrow to hopefully pick up a fresh .... something. Dont know which to get....I don't really know what a crown consists of, is it just the turkey without legs or wings? :D The frozen one I saw in Morrisons had a bone....so I dont get the point of them.

Help me..........:D

That's what I thought until I saw the Morissons one with a bone. If it's got a bone.....then it's just a turkey without wings and legs, surely.

That's a boned joint though not a crown. AFAIK a crown is just the breast meat on the ribcage so it has a bone.

We used to have turkey crown, which was indeed the whole bird with the legs removed. They're quicker to cook, easier to carve and you get less which is good if you're cooking for just a few people (or don't want a ton of leftovers.)

  • Shelbell is spot on .A crown has bones a butterfly doesn t ,the butcher will do this for you.I have to say the flavour and moisture come from the bones and its good stock afterwards .

  • Pound for pound the crown is way more expensive, but if you are like us and don't like the brown or legmeat they are perfect - take up less room in the fridge and no waste. The crown should be just the two breasts (still on the bone).

  • Yes, a crown is a breast of turkey on the (breast) bone - cooking meat on the bone usually means it has more flavour. While they are ideal for people who don't like the darker (thigh/leg) meat or for when it is just for a few people, I prefer the dark meat so if you do too then a small turkey might be a better option.
