This thread spurred me on yesterday to give AOL a call to find out whats what.
Unfortunately for me, reducing my package to one thats affordable for me wasn't going to happen, I can't honestly remember what line they spun me, but it was something about them having to pay a fee to BT because my exchange wouldnt allow me the cheaper rates anymore.

I spoke to a gentleman, who's name and email I can happily PM you, who managed to get my price down from 24.99 to 15.99 because I was a long standing customer, without any of the limits that the other packages hold.

The current package you are on has NO download limits, and he reassured me of this when I spoke to him on the phone, before reducing my rate.

The lovely man from AOL rang me back up today though, which was extremely nice of him, to tell me that the quote he had originally given me... £12.99, wasn't do-able because with the charges to BT, it would cost them too much, unless i wanted to go with them for line rental, which i didnt want. But because he had originally told me that I could have it for 12.99, he gave me 2 months free [credited my account with £32] for the inconvenience. See the email Below I received from AOL, see the bit i highlighted in red :):

Further to your recent request, we are pleased to confirm your telephone line has now been successfully re-graded for AOL Broadband Silver from AOL Broadband Platinum.
Your price plan has now been switched to AOL Broadband Silver and on your next billing date, your first months subscription fee for AOL Broadband of 15.99 will be debited from your payment method, in addition to a pro-rata element covering the period between your AOL Broadband Service being enabled and your first billing date on your new AOL Broadband price-plan.
For this package your usage allowance is unlimited, and you will get download speeds of up to 8Mbps. Please note that speed you'll receive will depend on a number of factors such as the quality of your telephone line and where you live.

(A working day is any day except Saturday, Sunday or a UK public holiday). Should you do so, you will simply revert back to the package you were on prior to entering into this new agreement.

Hello again! Thank you so much for posting, wow its great to hear that you actually spoke to someone genuine at AOL! the closest I got was the email from some guy called Ranjan who insisted that I would be on a 20 GB Usage allowance, I knew he wasnt telling me the complete truth!

Im guessing as your new package is AOL Broadband Silver and the email says 'for this package your usage allowance is unlimited' it should mean the same for me as I'm on AOL Broadband Gold which is also one of the old packages?

If you could please PM me the email address of the person you spoke too I would be extremely grateful :)

  • Well I was on Platinum before, that was unlimited, and now I'm on Silver, which is unlimited, so It's a wild guess... But I think maybe Gold might be too ;-)

Will PM you in a second.

  • I cant remember what my package name is, but for the last 18 months i have been paying £9.99 including AOL talk with no download limits. last time i bothered to measure my usage it was in the region of 70-80GB.

I never have issues with my speed / connection rates..AOL are ACE, makes a change to here from a non aol hater! lol
  • Hi,

I am like Poppy9 and MissWorzel. I have been with AOL silver since 2003? The old contracts with AOL do NOT have any download restrictions.

Also if you threaten to leave then they will reduce your monthly cost. They agreed to reduce my monthly bill from £19.99 to only £14.99. I refused to sign an 18 month contract so with reluctance they offered me a 6 month contract. I was also given a free wireless router plus 2 free months broadband for my trouble.
