On arrival the manager insisted that I hadn't paid upon booking even though I had a print out of the email confirmation of my payment. He tried to get me to pay again and wouldnt accept anything I said and then get changing his story as to what my receipt was for. Then he said he wasnt asking me to pay again but wanted my credit card to charge us £10 extra for having my partners guide dog with us. My partner is registered blind. I said they couldnt do this as it was discrimination against people with disabilities and the dog wasnt a pet, but a working guide dog. He had no knowledge of assistance dogs and insisted on the £10 additional charge. I asked to see their disability policy, and they said they didnt have one but showed me a book where they record details of all people with disabilities who stay in their hotel. I told them they were breaking the law by charging additional fees for assistance dogs but they didnt care. At this point a fellow guest backed us up and finally they checked us in without any extra charges. They said they had never heard of guide dogs being allowed free into hotels. The manager sad he had been working there for 3 years and had never heard that he wasnt allowed to charge people with disabilities for assistance dogs - therefore he has been illegally charging people with disabilities extra in this way for 3 years !
If you have a disability don't stay here.
If you expect a decent standard of accommodation dont stay here
If you expect to be treated with respect dont stay here
If you want anything of better quality than a bad attitude doss house - dont stay here.
Just for info I received the following reply from Travelodge (although they dont appear to call Guide dogs Guild dogs!!):-
Dear arealhighlander

Thanks for the info. I wrote a letter of complaint to customer services at the sleepy hollow address. I copied in the DRC and Guide Dogs org. About a week later I got a message on my ansa machine. I called the number back with n/r.
This evening I had a call from the Broad Street Birmingham Travelodge I stayed with - apparently they passed the complaint back to the hotel to deal with ....and best of all they passed the complaint to be investigated to one of the members of staff who I was complaining about !! Unbelievable !! So of course she interpreted the situation differently and said that on the date we tried to check in they were 'unsure' of the policy re guide dogs - utter rubbish - they refused to let us check in untill we had paid an additional fee for the guide dog. For the distress caused she apologised, and for the lack of disability awareness she apologied. However she refused a refund. After going back and forth with the denials and refuting of the incident as it occured (in much the same manor as when we went to the hotel in the first place) she agreed at my suggestion to try and get a donation paid to guide dogs instead.
She later called me back and said they would refund me £20. I accepted the refund as to be honest I have better things to do with my time than bang my head against a Travelodge brick wall. The only good that has come out of this situation is that at the birmingham broad street hotel they are now more aware of the DDA and disabilities and that I will now never stay at a travelodge again.
We are just chalking this one up to a bad experience.0
