How does fixed penalty points affect insurance?

I've got a fixed penalty notice for going though a red light. £60 and 3 points.
Been driving sine 1997 - spotless licence otherside, mortified obvously as was trying to avoid being rammed by a boy racer at the time of the offence. Will let myself get rammed next time.
I've notified my insurer but they were evasive - what increase is this likely to lead to for my next premium?
Very annoyed. I'm a very careful driver and spend most of my time on the roads avoiding people on mobile phones driving too fast.

You can find out now by doing virtual quotes online - both with and without the conviction/points and see if it makes any difference to the final quotes you receive.
As well as asking advice you also tell us you are "very annoyed" - is that cos you got caught? Don't hope for too much sympathy. You'd be even more annoyed if you were crossing on green and got smashed into by a red light jumper!0 -
Thanks.
Annoyed as I am such an over cautious driver usually and also annoyed that I see people every day trying to knock me off my bike (OH got knocked off badly a few months back)
The driver who was hustling knew what they were doing - went straight up the left turn lane and thorugh a red light - no camera on that one. I'm going to go and pay the fine and hand in my licence in person and try and speak to the police there to ask them to put a camera on that lane too as the drivers obviously know the way to go speeding. I'm not contesting it as I went through a red light- and that's the be all and end all.0 -
I would not worry about your premium, having worked for an Insurance Brokers for many years I found that the vast majority would not increase your premium for having 3 points. Just don't forget to tell them as non disclosure could invalidate any claim.Excited for Florida - May 2012 :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0

this is poor advice - most insurers increase premiums for 3 points
if 3 points didn't make a difference then why would it invalidate any claim?
hope this helps0 -
well I dont think its poor advice at all - I had to add an extra 3 points to my my quote this year:mad: (I already had 3 due up in april next year) and my quote actually went down
Having worked with a number of car insurance companys it shouldnt make too much difference and if it does shop around.0 -

it was the RAC but thanks for your helpful contribution:rolleyes:
I have to say though I was pretty surprised myself:rotfl:0 -
well I've just done a few online comparions and it seems that the range of premiums I am being offered are lower overall - there is the factoring in of my increasing no claims bonus years which might account for this.0

sorry i don't understand - i've just gone on to the leading price comparison sites www.moneysupermarket.com and www.confused.com and done insurance quotes that were identical in all details except one had no points, the other had 3 points
nearly all companies increased their prices, most by between 10% & 30% - not one insurer showed a lower price for the quote with the conviction points (which is what i suspected and reason why i posted earlier response)
if you're changing other details the same time then it's not a proper and fair comparison:money:0 -
I got 3 points in May 2006 which made no difference to my premium. Unfortunately I got another 3 points recently. I have notified my insurance company and they said it will make no difference to my premium until it comes up for renewal, which is not until the end of September next year.
I found very few quotes changed with or without 3 points and, in fact, quite a few companies didn't charge extra even with 6 points, which surprised me. This could partly be because I have a lot of no claims bonus and have been driving for quite a while and not claimed for a long time.3 stone down, 3 more to go0
