The 12 days of Old Style recipes

OK, just received a surprise present from an old flame, and looking for ideas on what to do with it.

Basically, it's a small bird, and he's also sent a small pear tree. Very nice of him, but it's an odd combination. All the same if there's any board in Christendom (other religions and spiritual destinations exist, as well as died in the wool Yorkshire atheism) that can solve this connundrum, it's got to be this one.

Obviously I've despatched and plucked the bird, saving the feathers to make a duster (would love enough feathers to make pillows, but would need SEVERAL large geese for that I think, and let's face it, that's NOT going to happen).

Anyway, I'm figuring that I can wrap it in a little bacon and cabbage and stew it in white wine with a dash of Calvados in the Remoska with sliced pears on the top, they should caramelize nicely and give a lovely intense flavour, mmmm. Giblet stock obviously too.

There was also the thought of taking some of the wood from the pear tree and using it to smoke the bird, I think that would be a very nice basis for some hors d'oeuvres. Seems a shame not to plant the tree out though.

Not the most practical of gifts, but it's the thought that counts. If there are any men on this board looking for ideas, a side of salmon and a rose plant would be a better choice. Or just chocolates. You can never go wrong with chocolates.

No idea what you're talking about Penny, all I have is a bird and a tree. Are you suggesting there may be more presents to come? If so, don't spoil the surprise ;)

....and if you dispatched this little bird as soon as you received it, you may be wanting to make a little more space in your freezer. Otherwise get some bird food in.
