They were explaining the job losses related to the car industry today on 5 Live.

Basically it was car manufacturer makes less cars, firm that supplies brakes for the cars has to make staff redundant, firm that makes specific nuts for the brakes has to lay off staff etc etc.

When a car manufacture has problems you don't really think that other firms make parts for that particular car maker.

Yeh, you don't realise they use other manufacturers, I just assumed everything was done 'in house'.

I hope it is, but I fear it isn't.

Nearly 7000 in the first week of April is a lot (ok RBS is to blame for a massive chunk). Those figures didn't even count the small companies getting rid of one or two people (or going bankrupt). I know of about a dozen redundancies this week alone from small companies.

Any body know the level where redundancies have to be pre-notified and the whole "consultation" process put in train?

The "voluntary" system and the "early retirement" together with "natural wastage" with appropriate bribes, presumably would not get into the figures above.
