ITN JobWatch

Has anyone else just seen the "JobWatch" segment on ITN News at Ten? They ran through all the job loss announcements in the UK this week, tallying up the total. The figure was over 31,000. Granted Woolworths was the bulk of that, but still 31,000 people being told their jobs are going the week before christmas.

  • Didn't see that particular one but saw just about the same on BBC news.

Was it something like 27000 jobs in Woolworths lost? Pretty awful just before Christmas. I really feel sorry for those people.

Hard times, but we all need to look ahead to the future. I do think this country, and indeed a lot of the world, have 'coasted' a little too long economy-wise (lol at my poor way of explaining things - I'm sure someone knows what I mean ) and this is a sharp wake up call for us all.

Let's hope we can get back on track soon!

Didn't they use to do this in the early 90s? I'm getting flashbacks. I was only a little 'un back then, though.

That's how I felt watching it. I wonder will it be a regular item now?
  • It's tragic, hopefully a good few will be able to find a new job quickly.

They were saying on the radio here (Yorkshire) that there are a lot of home care jobs available. Although not suitable for everyone they may suit some of Woolies staff who may be part time and not on high wages.

    Don't believe everything you think.

There is still a shortage of good teachers, especially Science, Maths and ICT teachers.

It was on Radio 2 yesterday too, that there are a lot of care assistant jobs and such like available throughout the country - minimum wage.
My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.

News at Ten did that in the early 80's recession.

Honestly? I know of many people in my area that have trained to become teachers, but can't find work. Most have to leave Wales and get a job in England, that's not easily done either! We've trained too many teachers and there aren't enough jobs to go round. Must vary from one area to another.

The smart move is to train as an undertaker.

All those 'baby-boomers' are now getting elderly and with the standards of NHS care dropping...

That's the one I remember. At the end of News at Ten, Sandy Gall would intone "one thousand losses at a shipyard in Scotland, 500 jobs go at a steel plant in Wales, but on the plus side, a newsagents in Bracknell has taken on a girl to do Saturday mornings" while on a map of the UK, big red arrows would appear phallically over the towns mentioned.

    Happy Days
