Used Car Values

Have you seen any evidence from private sales or car dealers that prices have dropped ? I am afraid I haven't.

Are you serious? I just bought a 2004 SAAB 9-5 Aero for £4.5K. That's something like a £20k loss someone's taken in 4 years. There are stacks of bargains out there.

  • 12 month old Audi RS4 for 30,000 quid. So yes, prices are tumbling...
  • have a look on pistonheads classifieds 60k m5's now sell for as low as 25k
watched an 04 mondeo ghia x fully loaded car new 22k sold for 2400-00 at auction
there are bargains out there but there are also a lot of people who need to sell for a lot more than they are going to get

You must be blind. I've seen a Mondeo 6 months older than mine with 40k fewer miles on for under half what I paid for mine 14 months ago. I paid the going rate at the time. It's not unique. 04 and 53 plate Mondeos which were £4.5-5.5k a year ago are now struggling to do £2-£2.5k.

Some of the smaller dealer website (google) but the one I would add is Ebay. They have a sort of Trade Section (classifieds) now so that is worth a look.
  • I really struggled to sell my Ford Galaxy recently. I was asking below trade in price for a car in A1 condition, still well within warranty period and there was virtually no interest.

In the end took a hefty hit from the one person who was interested. He got a bargain. It certainly is a buyer's market out there. The main dealers may not be dropping the headline figure but I bet they will drop more if you haggle.

My advice is to forget Auto Trader. It was expensive and all I got was calls from agencies. eBay seemed to work much better.
  • trouble at the moment is a lot of people and dealers have stock which owes them a lot more than it is currently worth
so they are advertising at a high price
i know dealers that have had certain cars for over a year and they were desirable cars 6 months ago

Merc CLS costing 88K two years ago, FSH and 32K miles, was advertised at 24K after chatting with the guy I could have got it down to 18K without much hassle.

If you stay away from the superminis and diesels there are some great bargains to be had, especially if you fancy a V8.

Oh and today a 1 yr old Murano 3.5 l V6 with 40K miles and FSH, initially costing 30 odd grand could be had for 14K, and I reckon more if you played hardball.
