right click COMPUTER
select PROPERTIES
It should tell you on there what service pack (If any) the computer has

If service pack ISNT installed (And if your NOT installing XP of course )
Then goto WINDOWS UPDATE and install it

Though I agree with the above poster. Vista really needs more than 1 gig ram (XP would be fine though)

You might try getting rid of AVG and using Avira AntiVir or Avast instead.

AVG has been known to cause considerable performance problems.

second this, i had avg and it was slowing the pc down(but then some people have been happy with avg) so i switched to avast which was miles better and im now using avira AntiVir which is also pretty good,

Uninstall all toolbars that are not used (Presumable all of them)
Uninstall AVG and replace with AVIRA anti virus

stop ANTI SPYWARE from running at startup (the free version doesnt use a resident scanner ayways, so its pointless)
