I recently asked John Lewis to price matched a Toshiba 20WLT56 LCD television against a local retailer who was offering it for nearly £200 less than them as I had heard in another forum that the same store had agreed to the same price match against the same television just two weeks earlier.

They refused, on the basis that the the item was not in stock at the advertised price.

I questioned their decision and referred them to the other price match.

Upon hearing this information, they agreed to honour the same deal, even though they didn't have it in stock and would have to order it in for me.

    Well done JL ! :T
  • although it was more than 12 months ago ive price matched a couple of items at john lewis saving a few hundred pounds on a sony TV ,,,as long as a store has it in stock and it isnt just a internet store they will match it (even sale items),,just leave the details with them ( that 3 miles radius comment doesnt ring true), they are also fantastic on returns and the staff seem more proffesional and competent than most stores. im sounding like a john lewis employee but i assure you im not, just believe credit due to those that deserve it. you can actually try price matching at a lot of the big multiple retailers, ive also done it at mothercare

If you have purchased an item from one of our shops and then find the same item selling for less in any UK shop, we will refund the difference. As we do not wish you to regret buying from us, we allow you up to 28 days from the date of purchase to claim this refund. We meet such claims on the same basis as the price checking done by our shops described above.

Our promise to you extends beyond the local area to cover any conventional shop in the UK where you find the same item on display at a lower shelf-edge price with the same availability and terms.

As I read it, there is no requirement for the matched shop to be local.

  • We saved a large amount on an American fridge with a price match.

We brought from the John Lewis Oxford street branch and matched with the internet at http://www.buyersandsellersonline.co.uk/.

Although a highly competitive Web Site Buyers and sellers also have a small shop in the Goldhawk road where you can purchase items at the web prices. This is within 5 miles of the Oxford Street branch. They sell all major White kitchen appliances and offer the same guarantees as John Lewis. An earlier poster mentioned that they now only matched within three miles so not sure if this will still work but they used to be typically 20% - 30% cheaper than John Lewis on most items.

I have recently price-matched with John Lewis - and there was no stipulation that the other store had to be within a certain distance!

    Their service was excellent...........
  • The price John Lewis will display on the shelf is limited to a reasonable distance though this varies on the store, based on where customers travel from and to etc, but case-by-case price matching (what we call a "one-off undersale") applies to any shop in the UK. That means if a shop in Lands End is selling something £40 cheaper than John Lewis in Aberdeen, they will match it for you.

Currently Partners get a £2 bonus for each undersale reported - it's not unkown for people to spend their breaks trawling local shops to boost their pay packet!

John Lewis service is usually good but can go very wrong as happened to me recently with a laptop, which was sent off for repair twice (the first time for six weeks) and still wasn't fixed. Finally after stirring things up they agreed to refund me. Best thing was, the equivalent model today is better than the one I bought, and cheaper. This meant I ended up with a better computer and £80 back in my bank account, plus another two years of guaranteed computing.

They now only price match if the guarantee from competitor is the same as well, so everything has to be same.

Not true, they PM the basic item, then add their own guarantee on top.

they no longer price match from the internet.

they then took the stance of only price matching within 10 miles of the store , then reduced that to 5 miles , that has or will be reduced again to 3 miles , they were losing too much money and just couldnt do it no more

All incorrect. They will price match ANY store in the uk provided it has a shop front and is in stock.

They also will PM 28 after purchase.

I saved about £400 on my TH42PX60ped with them! :D

I was told by the books dept. of John Lewis Welwyn that the 'never knowingly undersold ' guarantee was only for a five mile radius. I wonder whether individual stores can make up their own policy?

When I was 15 or so I took tights back to j.l quoting this promise as they were cheaper elsewhere and the s.a told me it meant the company had been under the same management and never 'sold on' and thats what 'undersold ' meant..i believed her at the time..but pah!whatcheek!

    anyway i found this..

''This page explains the phrases we use in our ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ notices in our shops. It also sets out our pricing policy for goods purchased via John Lewis Direct either online or from our catalogues.

We set very competitive prices for all John Lewis department stores. Our buyers set prices so that it is unlikely you will find the same product selling for less in other UK shops. We constantly check prices in local shops and if we find the same item cheaper, we lower our price to match, even during Sales.

Each shop checks the prices of likely competitors in the local area. (Details of the area covered are available on request from Customer Services in your local shop.) If we find a competitor within this area selling the same product that is part of our own standard offer at a lower price, our shelf price will be reduced to match. As a result all our customers benefit from the lower price, not only those who spot the difference.

The comparison must be with exactly the same item (brand, model, colour, size etc) and both we and the competitor should have the item in stock. We match the shelf-edge price the competitor displays, but not a negotiated or special price for particular individuals (e.g. their store card holders). We expect the goods to be offered on equivalent terms, and so we take into account any ‘hidden extras' charged by the competitor, such as delivery charges for items that would normally require delivery.

We do not price match with outlets which are not conventional shops, e.g. membership clubs, market stalls, duty free shops, mail order catalogues or the Internet. We do not match closing down sales as these are not trading as normal shops.

Our commitment to checking and lowering prices applies on the same basis to products in our competitors’ Sales. Where a competitor has a very short term promotion lasting only one or two days, we may not have enough time to check and change each price. However, our refund promise still applies.

While we normally try to obtain special order lines which are not part of our standard offer, we reserve the right to refuse such orders where it would be uneconomic for us to do so
    Never Knowingly Undersold Carrier Bag

Our buyers set the same prices for johnlewis.com (and John Lewis Direct catalogues) as for our John Lewis department stores. If the price of an item in our shops is changed due to price matching a national competitor, the online price will also change. Occasionally you may find a temporary difference in price if one or two of our department stores are just matching a local competitor.

If you order by phone from one of our catalogues, please note that prices are correct at the time of going to press and are subject to change both up and down.

By shopping direct, you have the benefit of home shopping convenience, quick delivery and guaranteed service. Because of this, we do not apply our ‘Never Knowingly Undersold’ pricing slogan to our internet and John Lewis Direct catalogue prices. Such retailing makes straightforward comparisons with conventional shops difficult; we are unable to verify the availability and comparability of the goods, or the standards of service and support that are offered by internet and catalogue competitors.

However, when you shop direct, you can always be assured of the same dedication to competitive pricing and exceptional value you find in our department stores.''

long..but should explain it to you all.

tbh these days I think john lewis area great company amongst other big players in the u.k..they have really good staff benefits, a good customer service philosophy and a good range..and not just pricey like many people think..they only sell quality hardy goods, which you cannot blame them for!
