My acer laptop of 3 years has recently gone bad with cpu usage at 90%+. At first I thought it was a virus which caused the problem but this still persist after fully formating the hdd. I'm using the laptop to type this message with a usb keyboard and mouse as then laptop keyboard and mouse pad are rendered useless.
I can use word or other application which doesn't required much cpu usage but this is bugging me. Could it be the hdd or cpu coming to the end of their life?

System idle process fluctate upto 80% and the other is System. I hope this can be fix my getting another cpu or hdd but I cannot afford to fork out for another laptop0

system idle is supposed to be high (it's just telling you hown much is NOT being used)
The "System" process being high may mean there is a faulty program (or plugin) that's hogging the system. Boot into "Safe Mode" and see if the same happens.
Also run a virus / spyware scan again.Laters

Have you downloaded and installed all of the correct/latest system device drivers from the laptop maker's website? I've seen very high CPU usage in the past with just the "generic" Windows drivers in use.0

Ok in safe mode the cpu usage is at 4% which is what it should normally be in normal window.
Normal mode break down of cpu usage as now:
System Idle Process: 0 - 99%
System: 0- 67%
Explorer.exe: 0 -25%
Taskmgr.exe: 0 - 33%
Firefox: 0 - 25%
Together it total upto between 85 - 97% cpu usage at all times.
I don't think it's laptop software as I formatted hdd did a re-install with all laptop software and this near full cpu usage still happens - also laptop keyboard and mouse pad is useless as I have to plug in usb keyboard and mouse during the install process to type or click.
I will do a full virus scan again to see what I can find, previously done this and no virus were found.0 -
I'm assuming this is XP , not Vista ?Ex forum ambassador

thers an issue like this with vista...oh welll , try this
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Ok thanks I will try the above and report back.
Done the scan and it shows no malicious result.

The one process that hogs the most when nothing is running is: System process follows by taskmgr.exe - (this is the task manager)0

you actually formatted? Sounds very odd that. Usaly a completely fresh format would clear all problems up. Did you do a quick format or a FULL format (I know you wont be happy with this, but if you did a quick format I REALLY suggest a full one and start all over again as ive had no end of problems with quick formatting):idea:0
