Booboo, sorry I can't help but was very interested to read about it as I have just got one for my son and knew nothing about it.
So 3RROD - this would be 3 red rings of death?? Happens quite often then.
Thanks for the heads up everyone at least I now know what to expect,
Booboo I hope you find a solution to your problem.0 -
I have an Xbox and would never dream of opening it if it went wrong for any reason.
Common sense says it would invalidate any warranty, and that would have been in the paperwork with the console when it was purchased.
Taking a shot at Microsoft when you opened the console is a bit cheap. Throwing the mention of your son in is even cheaper.
so if your dvd drive packed up and you couldn't play any games on your 360 you wouldn't put a replacement in ? or would you magic a new one inside the x box,so you or anyone wouldn't open it....for any reason lol
some of you people are soooo un-helpful0 -
If i was to buy an Arcade console and put my Elite's hard drive and HD cable on to it, would that in affect make the Arcade exactly the same as my Elite, bar the colour?0

im not sure if its common in the newer 360's, microsoft changed the inside of the 360, i think it was the processor(could be wrong) which caused the overheating and they changed it, the problem was more common in the older 360's, you can try and prevent RROD by not leaving it turned on whilst not playing on it, dont use it for long periods, keep it in a well ventilated area,0 -
Yes, pretty much. You can also connect the wireless controllers. The Arcade is basically a cut-down version of the Premium, so you can still have all the upgraded "options", you just need to buy them seperately. If i was to buy an Arcade console and put my Elite's hard drive and HD cable on to it, would that in affect make the Arcade exactly the same as my Elite, bar the colour? The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

If it was covered by a warranty, be it a standard one or an extended one put in place by the manufacturers due to a known issue, then no, not a chance. I'd send it back to MS and have them magic one in for free.so if your dvd drive packed up and you couldn't play any games on your 360 you wouldn't put a replacement in ? or would you magic a new one inside the x box,so you or anyone wouldn't open it....for any reason lol

Just to let anyone who is interested know, I've bought the Xbox 360 Arcade and put the RROD'd Elite's hard drive and HD wire onto it. It's exactly the same as the old one now and saved me a load of money and hassle of trying all the alternative's to fixing an RROD'd Xbox. I also found out Microsoft don't offer the 3 year extented warranty for the RROD problem to any Xbox made from around a month before this thread was written. They don't offer this because they 'believe' the problem is fixed so fingers crossed! I chose to take out insurrance from GAME for 2 years just incase i do get into the same situation again. I'll let you (who ever you is!) know if it does get any problems. Have a good New Year everyone and thanks for the help

Glad to hear you're up and running again!
Newer Xboxes shouldn't really have an issue with this as the motherboard is clamped in a way to stop it from warping when it heats up, but to be absolutely sure, you want to make sure it's well ventilated all the way round the console, and they tend to run slightly cooler when layed down horizontal.
Also steer well clear of the "extra cooling" units you can buy from places like Game, as they actually restrict airflow and make the issue worse. The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

I've heard that they invalidate guarantees!0
