Xbox 360 3 Red Light Problem

I purchased an Xbox 360 Elite for my son last November costing over £250, 14 months later it broke down due to overheating problems, my son went on the internet and found this was a common problem that microsoft has known about for at lest 2-3 years, having contacted them by phone i was told that it was out of guarantee and they would send packaging for me to return the console to them for repair, unfortunately until they receive the console they could not give me a cost, I then spoke to a few people who had returned there console for repair and they were charged well over a £100, I decided to open the console to see if there was anything obvious like a loose lead (this is not uncommon either) having found nothing I closed it back up and asked around reputable dealers to see if I could get it fixed locally, It was then I found out that microsoft are the only company allowed to repair the console, I also was told that microsoft had extended there guarantee for 3 years if the Xbox had been purchased within the last 2 years. I phoned them back and was told because it had been opened the 3 year guarantee is void and they were now not prepared to repair it even if I paid.

This has left me with a very expensive 360 Xbox that I cannot get repaired, lots of games (some of them bought for this christmas) that cannot be played on any other console except a Xbox all because microsoft has the sole rights to repair what is a fundamental fault that they have been trying to correct for 3 years and still haven't found a solution! we are talking of thousands of Xboxes that have the same problem, there is even a fan pack you can buy as a extra to try and elevate the problem, If this was a car manufacture there would have been an outcry followed by a recall of all vehicles to have the fault put right.

I'm hoping you can help as I seem to have exhausted every other avenue.

An Xbox 360 isn't like a PC, it's a sealed unit. Why would you open it??

It's common practice that the warranty is voided if you open a product like this, as the engineers now don't know if the person's just fiddling with things to try and get a new replacement.

There was outcry and MS responded by extending warranties to 3 years IF the 3RROD materialised (any other fault does not extend the warranty).

Have a look around for the X-Brace fix.
The pen is mightier than the sword, and considerably easier to write with.

ok first thing im sure even if its 14 months old that if it had the 3 red lights then you could have sent it to Microsoft for a free repair, opening it up has just blown any chance of it being repaired my microsoft,
  • I don't understand why if it was suffering from three red rings that Microsoft would not honor the warranty, unless it has been modified or you didn't make it clear that it had three red rings.

In any case, it's quite a fundamental failing of the console, so you might be as well to just buy an Arcade model at £100 and know for next time not to open it up..

Microsoft extended the guarantee for the 3 RROD fault to THREE YEARS for all 360's. It should be repaired FOR FREE.

well the OP decided to open up the console and has now voided any chance of sending it to microsoft to repair it
  • I have heard that microsoft still fix boxes that have been opened for free as long as nothing has been modded ie drives flashed. I would send it back and see, if they do say they are going to charge you get it returned and try xclamping it
Nothing to see here, move along.

I've not encountered anyone saying that they've repaired one after discovering it's been opened, but I've read a lot of people who've had them returned and not been fixed because of it. I guess you've just come across some lucky people.
  • I understand that there was a 3 year extended warranty because of the 3 red rings but i found this out after opening the xbox. I've spoken to the people at microsoft and they said once it has been opened they cannot do anything with it. Just wanted to know what other options i have coz i spent alot on the console and accessories?

I have an Xbox and would never dream of opening it if it went wrong for any reason.

Common sense says it would invalidate any warranty, and that would have been in the paperwork with the console when it was purchased.

Taking a shot at Microsoft when you opened the console is a bit cheap. Throwing the mention of your son in is even cheaper.
