Sorry, I'd better calm down - my previous state will return should the previous download speeds do the same :-)

Now I've got this sorted, I think I might log off(!) and go watch The Big Lebowski to put me in an even better mood lol!

Thanks (again) for all your help TOG, and you too albertross.

Hold the horses. Ok, slow speeds are back. But I've discovered the problem. This is nuts:

When my flatmate has his Sony Vaio laptop switched on, I get download speeds of around 500 KB/Sec. But when he turns it off, my speeds are back down to around 100 KB/Sec !!!

We've tested it loads in the past 5 minutes and it's definitely the case.

What now TOG?! lol! Apart from having the Vaio switched on all the time! :-)

For the record the Vaio is using "Intel PROSet/Wireless" Speed: 54.0 Mbps
  • Have you got the Vaio's IP address set up as your gateway, DHCP or DNS server?

Er I dont think so? Can I find that out? I haven't considered the Vaio laptop when previously getting on to the wireless network. My card just recognises our network, I choose that, input the correct WEP key and connect.

It's as if the Vaio is acting as some kind of booster??
  • With the Viao off, open a command prompt on your PC and type in ipconfig /all

Make a note of the details. Turn off your pc. Turn on the Viao, turn on your PC again and re-enter ipconfig /all. Look to see if any of the details are different.

Strange eh? :-) Well at least I'm a lot nearer to the solution than I was - cheers TOG.
