My Polish girlfriend has been made redundant

This is the problem when DT/ Arms regulars start 'visiting' the Benefits board. They forget (ignore) the purpose of the board and turn advice threads into slanging matches. Will anything ever be done about it? I doubt it.
I think we've all been guilty of going OT once or twice(I know I have!) and discussing welfare policies, but some of the posts on here are deliberately offensive, to say the least.
I'm amazed they are still there tbh!0 -
Thanks to the people who've offered constructive advice.I would just like to clarify that my girlfriend is not looking to claim any type of benefit (she wouldn't be entitled to it anyway) and she didn't come to the UK to live off £ 50 a week.To another poster, I WILL be supporting my girlfriend until she finds something else. I was simply asking if there was a reduction in Council Tax if one of the occupants is not working. I was prompted to asked this question as when my girlfriend moved in with me and I declared this to the Council then they had no hesitation in raising my Council Tax to the full amount.I naively thought that some reduction might be available.I'm not surprised about the blind prejudice about my girlfriend's nationality but I am a little taken aback by some of the vitriol aimed at me because I have savings in the bank.Hit the snitch button!member #1 of the official warning clique.

Good for you Spiritus for being proactive and saving money even though you are on a modest salary.
When I read some of the posts on the DFW board, there are some people that have clearly got into debt and haven't bothered to save for a rainy day. Spiritus here does everything he can to save and he gets lambasted for having savings.
I take my hat off to you Spiritus for not being one of the many that have got into debt by spending frivolously with other peoples' money.0 -

No, as I indicated in my earlier post, council tax at the full rate is due because you are no longer a single occupant. It matters not how much savings you have/haven't got, whether either, both, or neither of you is working, simply that there is not a single occupant any longer. It is only single occupants who qualify for the 25% reduction.Ær ic wisdom funde, ær wearð ic eald.

It looks as though the unacceptable posts have gone.
Thank you mods.0 -
listen mate you said you have 20k in savings
do you really honestly think you are going to get help when you have that amount tucked away when we have hard working families on here that cant even get a basic benefit.
you are not going to get any sympathetic replies when you make daft statements like that.
didnt know the school holidays had already started:rolleyes:0 -
When I wasnt working after having my first child (materniy leave was only 6 months then and I didnt feel ready to go back to work as had no family around to care for my child and the nursery had nearly a year waiting list) I wasnt entitled to anything. My husbands income at the time was £16.2k so very similar to OP's.
I had been working and paying tax for 7 years (since I was 16) but couldnt get a reduction in council tax as only students are ignored it seems. Couldnt get job seekers as I wasnt seeking a job, so We had to take out a loan to cover the extra few months off before my son went to nursery.
Guess you will have to dip into your savings a little until your girlfriend finds another job I'm afraid.0 -
And well done Spiritus for keeping your cool and not being drawn into aggressive response. The posts seem to have gone and I didn't even see them but I can imagine. It happens all the time on this bit of the forum
Regarding your savings, we all know why you mentioned that. Should have given no reason for an onslaught.
You, as a couple, are I am afraid simply more victims of the disaster that massive borrowing on all levels has brought about:oI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
You should stand outside Sainsbury's in Market Harborough...Big Issue please Madam....anyone from the area will know who I mean.
Awww, I so feel for that lady. She is outside Sainsburys in all weathers every day all day. I have never known a Big Issue seller work the same patch for so long.
I normally buy from her. You can't deny that she doesnt try very hard for the (probably very little) money she gets.
She has been wrapped up in a very ugly looking rug though for the last few weeks. It's so cold at the moment!
Agree with you about the Madaaaaaam bit!!!0
