  • To get a 25% reduction in council tax benefit you have to be living alone (or certain other categories, students I think). Not that there are 2 adults living in the house whether working or not working.

I, for one, can't offer any advice apart from heading to the CAB or Job Centre Plus but I cannot believe how unpleasant the people answering this board are. It borders on blind prejudice and is worse than sickening.

I wish you and your girlfriend all the best. I am sorry that I can't offer any more concrete suggestions

+1 to that i have no idea what advice to offer you but that fact you have 20k savings i would say maby you could support your g/f untill she gets another job?

some of the replies in this thread are discracefull e what dose this thread have to do with a romainian women selling the big issue? maby there is one but theress also loads of british peoople doing the same thing . all the people who complain about forigners taking jobs getting benifits etc are just, unhappy miserable bitter twisted stuck up their own !!!! !!!!!. polish people take all the jobs the lazy doll dossing british people cant be botherd to do and they pay tax benifiting the economy there is still plenty of jobs out theere! the amount this will effect your personal life is minimal! theres more important things to worry about in this world than your ignorant views anyone living in this countrie is lucky full stop. fancy living in africa and having to walk 6 miles to get a drink from a lake? im sure if you needed a kidney and the only person if the world with a sutible donor was the starter of this thread you would show him a tad more respect.forigen people come here to better themselves i wish i could go to another country and earn money 50 times more valuable than the money is worth in my country!

We have a Romanian woman selling Big Issues here.......

She stands on the street waving it in your face pleading 'BIG ISSUE! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!!!'

    Quite unnecessary and frightening!

Judging by the size of her.........shes hardly starving either!!!!!!!!!!

You should stand outside Sainsbury's in Market Harborough...Big Issue please Madam....anyone from the area will know who I mean.

As for the OP....tell her to join the queue (behind everyone from Woolworths)...£20,000 and you want the rest of us to pay....the nerve

Not THE Dave from Market Harborough????

It doesn't seem very long ago that we were being told our economy was so successful and was booming to such an extent that we 'needed' all of the immigrants to keep the economy going.

Now, with unemployment approx 1.5 million and rising by the day, it's not racist to state the bl**dy obvious.

This is the problem when DT/ Arms regulars start 'visiting' the Benefits board. They forget (ignore) the purpose of the board and turn advice threads into slanging matches. Will anything ever be done about it? I doubt it.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Hi Spiritus, I am sorry to hear your GF has lost her job and I hope she can find another one soon.
I am not aware of a reciprocal arrangement re benefits from Poland but if I were you I would look into it, declaring all your own income and savings of course.

    Good luck :)

listen mate you said you have 20k in savings
do you really honestly think you are going to get help when you have that amount tucked away when we have hard working families on here that cant even get a basic benefit.
you are not going to get any sympathetic replies when you make daft statements like that.

Firstly, I am not your "mate".Secondly, how can you differentiate between "people who have savings" and "hard working families" as if the two are mutually exclusive ??My savings weren't given to me. I worked damned hard to build my savings up. I don't smoke and I don't drink so I don't squander my money. My salary is £ 16500 p.a. and has always been about that mark so don't judge me.Some benefits are not means tested (even Posh & Becks) were entitled to child benefit so I hardly think my question was "daft".The level of prejudice on here is disappointing but not surprising.

  • When I dealt with imported benefits eons ago, the customer had to be receiving benefit in their own country then bring it with them if they came to the UK looking for work. They presented their own benefits entitlement letter to the Jobcentre, it was then faxed off to Newcastle for translation & currency conversion then they instructed us how much to pay every fortnight when the customer signed on, although then entitlement only lasted 13 weeks, dunno if that's been changed.

At the end of the award we advised Newcastle how much had been paid & they recovered the cost from the overseas social security department. So little if any cost to UK plc.

If the OP's gf is returning to Poland for Christmas she might as well get a claim in with them & bring it back with her on her return to UK. Better than nothing.

Thanks to the people who've offered constructive advice.I would just like to clarify that my girlfriend is not looking to claim any type of benefit (she wouldn't be entitled to it anyway) and she didn't come to the UK to live off £ 50 a week.To another poster, I WILL be supporting my girlfriend until she finds something else. I was simply asking if there was a reduction in Council Tax if one of the occupants is not working. I was prompted to asked this question as when my girlfriend moved in with me and I declared this to the Council then they had no hesitation in raising my Council Tax to the full amount.I naively thought that some reduction might be available.I'm not surprised about the blind prejudice about my girlfriend's nationality but I am a little taken aback by some of the vitriol aimed at me because I have savings in the bank.
