Any aerial/tv men about?

hi,

I've posted regarding the issue I have with my lack of tv signal. I would like to be able to have at least 4/5 channels or even be able to use my freeview box.

I have a downstairs bedroom in the PR1 area and it seems we are a fair way from Winter Hill, the nearest satalite. Someone suggested it might be possible to get a aerial fitted/me joined to the main aerial so that I can get a decent TV signal, how would I go about doing this? Is it possible? How much is it likely to be?

You might consider this, instead of a new aerial installation.

Assuming you dont want to continue, after the 'free' first 3 months of Sky channels, it'd be a much cheaper option for you.

Briefly, you buy the Pay Once pack from Argos (with free delivery & £5 off currently - check the codes in Argos forum) have the dish & box installed, then you can either pay monthly subscrition to Sky, or cancel & you keep the equipment, watching all the Freeview stuff, as before, without further payment.

You could then buy a Freesat box/recorder, if you wanted to start to record programmes. Currently around £200.No need to do this, if it isn't wanted.

Check yellow pages for aerial fitter.

I had two aerials fitted last year. One feeds 3 tvs at the front of the house, living and two bedrooms. Another a tv in bedroom at the rear. They just split the cable into a splinter attached outside. This is no problem if you are close to the transmitter as we are.

Other than that you could just have another aerial fitted. Or get a satellite dish/lnb and freesat (not sky) for around £80 for freesat SD or £120 for freesat HD plus dish/lnb/cable and fitting. Argos even supply a contractor to do fitting for £110

I have been known to dress up...

Seriously, put your full postcode into this http://www.wolfbane.com/cgi-bin/tvd.exe?DX=L&HT=10&OS=pr1 you should be able to get freeview no problem and it tells you the aerial to use. I am in PR1 now (at work) and colleagues tell me it's OK round here for freeview.

PR1 area should have no problems with tv signal from winter hill.
you should just need a Y-splitter from the main aerial cable, to take another cable to the bedroom.

and freeview boxes are so cheap, (10/20 quid) buy another for the bedroom.
    Get some gorm.

Which will reduce the signal on both sets.

That sounds good but Im unsure as soome of the feedback on the argos website doesnt seem to be too good ... I ust dont want to make my life even more complicated than it has to be!

Thanks for the website Dursley - I will have to have a proper look through it.

Savemoney - what sort of price am I lloking at for that to be done? Looking at the roof it looks like there may be something coming off the aerial so Im worried I will weaken the signal even more.

brig - I am in the Hartington road area and my room is downstairs ... I seem to be the only one in the house to have all these problems, so I thought that was the problem. I've actually already had that website from the previous posting I did and was told I WOULD have problems.

ormus - how would I go about having that done? could I do it myself or would I need to employ someone...

I live in a landlorded house so I guess I will have to clear it with the landlord and then other flatmates ...

Yes it's an outdoor type (like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=22523), but Maplin (at the bottom of the hill) and CPC (near Asda) both sell indoor high gain aerials (like http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=115127&&source=14&doy=20m12), but I have no idea if they will work or not in your situation. Both will accept returns AFAIK, so ask if you can bring it back if it doesn't work for you.

I got a kit from Wickes a while ago that boosts the signal and allows you to connect 4/6 TVs to one aerial. I mounted mine in the loft and ran the cables to the bedrooms and front room. Does the job very well and doesn't require an pro in to do the job or playing about up a ladder in the cold and wet!:j
