ryanair - what does the cage measure on my Argos suitcase

have just bought this £10 case from Argos
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=1500001001&langId=-1&searchTerms=2861962
the measurements dont include the wheels and once I have taken them into consideration its nearly 58 cm rather than the 55 max. Have done a search and people have recommended this case has anyone ever had one of these put in the cage by Ryanair? Presumably Ryanair are measuring only 2 of the three measurements in the cage and I don't know which.

Have gone nearly mad over this case business the only ones that seem to accurately reflect and maximise the Ryanair measurements are the Samsonite ones. Have measured every case in existence practically before settling on this Argos one that now maybe isnt any good!

I cannot buy a case without wheels as my back a bit dodgy!

  • I fly Ryan air regularly, I carry a rucksack and never had it placed in the cage, even though it's usually busting at the seams, my partner has a rolling case the same as you describe, the last time that was put in the cage, it didn't fit, but they weren't concerned about the size, just the weight.

No, the cage measures all 3 measurements - if it sticks out or or can't get into the cage then it's officially too big

I would not risk taking a case thats too big, You need something squashy so that it will fit in the frame. The case you have has a metal frame so there is no give at all. Why don't you just check in your luggage if you have back trouble saves you carrying it around
    £100 - £10,000
  • moneylover this really annoys me when cases are marked as one size but really aren't. We bought 3 hand luggage sized cases to use, these also were the 'correct' size, we packed them and then I thought I'd just check (bit late I know) and they were bigger including wheels etc. We flew ryanair and they didn't check them,we had no hold luggage to check in. Upon returning I stuck one of the cases in the basket (too late for them to say antything!) it was too big. Hubby said he would have just pulled the wheels off if they had stopped us! LOL! We only paid £5 for each case in the sports direct shop.We are using them again on Sat only flying Easyjet this time.
  • I just measured my partners case, it's a Dunlop, bought for £8 at Sports Direct, measures 57x35x21, she's used it over 30 times on Ryan Air and never had a problem, she'll be using it when we fly on Sunday too.
As you say it's the wheels that make your case oversize, if you're asked to put it in the cage, just insert it upside down, then instead of a full length of case sticking up over the top, it'll just be the bottom of the wheels protruding...... but I doubt you'll ever be challenged over the size!

I have this suitcase and used it with Ryanair last month, without problem. I bought it specially for Ryanair. I thought that it was within the tolerances. However, you are correct in that it is 58cm. I note that on the rigid handle that there are two screws, one at either side of the handle and it should be possible to remove the rigid plastic handle and pop it inside the case until you get off the plane at which point you could reattach it. That should bring it to just about the tolerance.

You are lucky then, they seem to be tightening up recently.

    did they measure it though??!!

There is just such an opening in the market for a maximum dimensions lightweight and not too expensive roller suitcase! If anyone knows of one please post. Samsonite, as I said, are spot on but expensive and quite heavy.

Has anyone had their suitcase measured by Ryannair and got away with just the wheels sticking out? From what people say Ryannair are tightening up and they can make a lot of money forcing people to put baggage in the hold.

No they didnt measure it and I saw no cage anywhere. This may be because you bypass the check-in when you only have cabin baggage and once through security the only time you have direct contact with Ryanair staff is when you get to the gate. At that point they didn't seem to be concerned about baggage, but that may not always be the case I guess.
