Question: British Gas been charging me the wrong tariff!

Over a year ago I signed up to Click Energy 4 with British Gas.

I never received any paper bills and did everything online so assumed that I was doing the right thing, it was only during a routine call I found out I was on the Paperless Standard Tariff, despite me having confirmation Emails I was on Click Energy.

I have written twice and not received any response, I know now from when I log in online I have now been switched to the Energy tariff, is it actually worth pursuing getting my bills back dated a year for overcharging? I dont know how much this would work out to, and Im so annoyed with their customer service Im thinking of switching rather than chasing it up!

  • I had the same sort of problem not long ago, and I managed to get my bills back dated a year, I think it's worth trying. But I would call if I was you, that's the only way to get things done, and even then, it might take a few phone calls. But all in all, my experience with BG has been 100000% better then with npower, not sure it's worth switching! Go to saynoto0870.com to get a free or local number for them.... and good luck.
  • Hi
i think you should keep at it requesting for your bills to be backdated as it possibly could add up to a significant amount, I used to work for BG unfortunatly for a number of years in customer service, you would need to do it via email or letter though as an apparant benefit of click energy is tht you manage your own account via the website, so they dont have as many people working in customer services, so if you rang the normal bg number they wouldnt have access to your account.
  • Seems to me that as they have you on the wrong tariff, you should be able to call them! Basically, the whole point is that you are not on click energy isn't it, so they can hardly argue that they can't help you, can they?

Had the same issue. Signed up for Click Energy 4 Elec back in Oct 2007. Received letter to confirm. Thought nothing more of it until a couple of weeks ago when I tried to compare my charges to their website. The !!!!!!s had put me on a standard rate since I joined.

1 phone call later and they had backdated the rates to click energy 4 (As they should). I then asked to be put onto Click Energy 6 as it was cheaper and as a way of saying sorry they have backdated my click energy 6 to the start of that tariff.

Least they could do but a happy camper here.

Best check you are on the correct rate if you signed up for Click Energy 4 as it appears there are issues.
  • A mate of mine had exactly the same problem. He's the naturally shy type and wouldn't ring them to complain so he let me pose as him and ring them. I was very polite but insistant and they agreed without too much of a fight to backdate the Click 4 tariff to the time he had joined them. It made a surprising difference to his bill...

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • I signed up for Click 4 in November 2007 and electricity was supplied to us by british Gas from the beginning of January 2008. As a result of reading this thread I have had a look at my bills for 2007 and the only reference that I can find on the bills says 'Standard Rate'. I have sent British Gas an emeil to query this and will see what happens.

    Alan,

Just ring them up on 08000480101 they will be able to sort it out over the phone and send a revised bill within 2 weeks. If you applied over the internet (They can tell) then you would have applied for a Click Energy product.

From owing them £141 I'm now down to £54 all because they put me on he wrong tariff.

How many others are there ?
  • I had an emeil back fro British Gas this afternoon but it did not deal with the problem so I telephoned them. The lady that I spoke to is arranging for the four bills to be re-worked to calculate the refund.

Bearing in mind all the interest and comment regarding energy costs you would think that when BG became alerted to the problem that some customers had not been given the correct tarriff then they would start enquiring from their computer if there were others in the same situation.

    How many more I wonder?

  • I have now had a revised statement from British Gas after they have corrected their mistake and put me on Click 4 for electricity for all of 2008.

Unstead of a debit of £15.27 at the end of the year I now have a credit of £73.44, I am very pleased at that result.
