Surely you mean credit the account. We don't want to give them money for their own mistakes now, do we?

You will need to summarise the events - ie what/how you were informed or misinformed by the staff. Also, you will need to explain how much inconvenience their negligence has caused you. However, if your letter is not received by someone who is sympathetic, do not expect any compensation. You could be wasting a stamp. They will probably see it that if you have not incurred any out of pocket expenses as a result of this debacle, you are not due any compensation.

Furthermore, they will probably advise you that if you really needed money desperately, you could have gone to a branch. The fact that it is inconvenient will not be taken into consideration. Consequently, it was your choice.

Nevertheless, don't let me put you off from complaining. Wish you luck. Let us know the outcome.
