Best Free Anti-Virus?

Avira's paid-for Premium version just won an award as the best product of 2008 on the AV comparatives review site
Ok, that doesn't necessarily imply their free version is the best amongst the free ones. But Premium is available free for 3 months, as mentioned on another thread here0 -
Im sure if you used PCTOOLs firewall with AVIRA anti virus, it would run fine
No it didn't.
Outlook and Word 2007 both seem to be very resource hungry and with that configuration it was taking about 5 seconds for an email to open.
I'm still not sure if there isn't something wrong with my PChttp://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1316751 but hopefully the memory will sort it out.

Ok - have downloaded and installed Avast but now what??
I have no icon in my tool bar to say it's running, windows says it's switched off (and clicking turn it on makes no difference).
When I click on the Avast icon it does a memory test and says continuing but then does nothing!
What am I doing wrong?xxx Nikki xxx0 -
Roadster ~ Avira doesnt even have anything to do with emails!
I remember that post yeah
Try SUPERANTI SPYWARE

C.I.S is my favorite at the moment. Was using antivir a few works ago with Comodo Firewall but i decided to change to Comodo anti virus as well. It seems to be alot faster loading and opening applications.0

The 3 main ones are AVG, AVAST and AVIRA
Avast is the overall best. AVIRA good if you have a slow computer
Avita AntiVir seems to have better detection rates than Avast. I saw one test where Avira even beat NOD32 by quite a significant margin.
I would say if email scanning isn't important (perhaps you only use webmail), Avira AntiVir would be the way to go.0 -
