How to reduce legal risk when sharing Internet with others

Options
Just moved into a flatshare, no internet yet, other flatmates moving in soon.
Thinkin for taking broadband under my name, but a bit worried that my flatmate might do something illegal with it, we all heard those horror stories of people receiving large bills from Law firms requesting payment for illegaly downloaded stuff or people jailed for downloading terrorism related material.

What can I do to mitigate these risks? is there any BB provider than blocks such content when asked to?

I wouldn't worry too much - it's downloading this stuff that's illegal, not really facilitating the downloading - ie if you were blamed for providing the BB, surely the ISP would be blamed and so on - it's the individual responsible that gets done. Keep your PC clean and you should avoid any of the "worst case" stuff you mention. Of course, having a terrorist living with you probably has it's own drawbacks ;)

You can probably restrict access to certain material through software and your router, if you're that fussed, but it's not really a substitute for good old fashioned trust...
  • best way to "mitigate the risk" is to get bb in your flatmate's name
Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.
  • easiest way is password protect your BB router with WEP and don't allow them on it.

That's true, actually - not overly moneysaving, but I guess the safest way is just to have a BB line each...

WEP encryption does not take long to crack!
