Is this deal too good? And which phone?

Hi all, I was hoping for a little advice, and to point out what I think to be a couple of the best offers out there at the moment.

They are both on 3, which I know has mixed opinions. However, having some friends on the network I know they will work where I want them to.

Going to this page on the three website brings up the latest offers http://threestore.three.co.uk/default.aspx

Now I really want the Motorola V3x and have been hunting phone deals for the best part of this week. I've called o2 to upgrade but they want £99 for it (I'm on their retention tariff already - 500 xnet mins, 400 txts £25 pm).

Vodafone will offer it for free on a 200 xnet mins 500 texts £30 pm - 18 month though.

This offer with 3 though seems to be amazing. 300 xnet mins, 1000 texts (2000 for 3 months), 25 video mins, 50 picture or video messages (100 for 3 months), £5 inclusive downloads (£10 for first 3 months), and the phone - a Motorola V3x...free! All of this is £30 on a 12 month contract.

http://threestore.three.co.uk/offerdetails.aspx?offercode=DSL14OL34 Here's the link.

I notice also they offer the same deal with a Nokia N70 here http://threestore.three.co.uk/offerdetails.aspx?offercode=DSL14OL28

My question is simply which is the better phone/which would you all go for? Plus am I really missing anything with this deal?

Many thanks and I hope this post will be useful to someone. :j

I'm not sure if the V3X is the same as the V3? But if it is, you might do better here, on o2:

    http://www.e2save.com/mobile/phones/disphandset.php?network=O2&handset=V3BLU

    or here, on Orange:

    http://www.e2save.com/mobile/phones/disphandset.php?network=orange&handset=V3

or here on 3 with the V3X:

    http://www.e2save.com/mobile/phones/disphandset.php?network=three&handset=V3X

Also I note that on your link to the 3 website that the offer is half price line rental for 6 months, but on an 18 month contract.

Hi and thanks for your reply. The V3x is the 3G advancement of the original V3, and has a better camera.

Also there are two offers on the '3 offers page' and the one i am interested in is http://threestore.three.co.uk/offerdetails.aspx?offercode=DSL14OL34 which is a 12 month contract.

I really appreciate your time and trouble to also look around for a good deal with the phone

    Thanks

EDIT: The tariff is called the Online 1400 http://www.three.co.uk/priceplans/onlinePlans.omp

OK but would the Video Talk & Text 700 plan suit you with e2save? That gives you half price line rental for 6 months @ £17.50, and it's a 12 month deal. It's the 5th option down the list.

Plus, if you go via Quidco you'll get £26.50 (less £5 per annum registration fee) or Greasypalm will give you £15.75
  • I work for Three selling their phones in-store, and to be honest, I'd recommend the Motorola V3x before I'd recommend the Nokia N70. The V3x's ease of use is so much better, the buttons are pushable, and in my opinion, it looks better. If you combine the internal memory you get in the N70 with the 64MB memory card you get with it, the Nokia wins hands-down. But you can pick memory cards up cheap these days on eBay etc, so don't let that be the deciding factor.

Any other questions, don't hestitate to ask.

PS. If you're buying direct from Three, get an Online tariff, not a Video, Talk & Text one, cos you'll get way more for your money.

Hi, thanks again for replying. I would need at the very minimum about 350 texts. More is useful and in both cases the minutes are fine.

I used the mobilecostcalculator.xls posted up here a while back and even with the cash back via Quidco it still makes it around £50 more over the 12 months. May not look like much but that's limiting myself to 350 texts in each case (400 texts makes it just over £100 more for the 12 months).

I hope I've worked that out right, I won't be ordering for a few days still.

    Thanks again Steve_xx - you're a credit to MSE.

This is gold. Thanks StudentSaver I appreciate the opinion on the phones and from someone I'd say is qualified to comment on their features. I think I'm leaning to the V3x and the online 1400 at the moment.

Can I just ask you a question? I heard that if I port my number in to 3 that any video calls received won't work on the ported number. Are there any issues with this?

    Thank you.

I honestly don't know. I don't see why it shouldn't work, as the SIM card you get is a 3 SIM. The only difference is that the number is changed. I'll find out tomorrow for you and report back.

I've just had a thought in addition. If you like Nokias at all, you might like to hold off for a few weeks. Their 6280 will be released the the general public then. It's a slide phone, like the Samsung D600 etc. At the minute, it's only available to upgrade customers, because the stocks in the UK are so limited. I think they'll release it to everyone in early February, though.

Dude thanks so much. I would appreciate the knowledge. I'll look up the 6680 as it sounds intriguing, but I think I'll still stick with the V3x - it's the one I've been after for a little while now.

Can you either PM or post here if you manage to find out about the number porting? Thanks very much :j

That is correct as I understand it - if you port your number, you still keep the 3 number which has to be used for video calls (according to Three's website). Something to do with the technology (or specific numbers for video calls going through a different route?).
