i can remember a few years back allways counting how many slices there were in my loaves of bread. so i could work out how many loaves i needed for the week
i dont know why, but i bought hovis best of both medium sliced this evening and for the first time in ages i counted the slices ( not including the crusts) and there were only 18, now i am sure that most loaves of bread used to have 21.
so i was just wondering for comparision how many slices are in your shop bought bread,
even though the weight is the same, the slices must be thicker so less slices, which means you will use it quicker..lol... and then will have to buy more...
i have a bread maker, but cant allways make my own bread or call to the bakers during the day..
'slice guide' excluding crusts
hovis best of both med 800g ................18 slices
Toastie..kingsmill 800g.........................14 slices
newtons thick cut...............................18 slices
morrisons medium wholemeal 800g..........22 slices
warbutons wholemeal 400g ..................16 slices
warbutons farmhouse white thick...........17 slices
white farmhouse 400g..........................11 slices

This has been one of my pet hates for a while now. About 18mths ago, I noticed that some 'medium' sliced loaves had become too thick for sandwiches to be appetising. Also, as you say, it makes you buy more bread (cash in the bank for the bakers/supermarkets!).
Through shopping around though, I've found that Asda's own medium sliced is OK for sandwiches (don't know about other supermarket's own label bread though), it's mostly the premium brand bread that's very thick.0 -
There used to be thin sliced loaves on the shelves but I haven't seen one of those in a long time:rolleyes:0

mmm come to think of it.. i havent seen thin slices in mainstream loaves of bread.. a cunning plan
our local baker slices their bread thinly.. which i will have to count the slices the next time i go, but sometimes the slices are so thin the fall apart when you getting the slices out of the bag..lol..
olliebeak, i think a few years ago the loaf which we now class as medium would have been classed as thick slice
i wonder what other foods have gradually changed, so we use them up quicker?Work to live= not live to work0 -
 Just counted a loaf of Toastie which the boys love..Used to be 21 slices..thought it was now 18,was last time I counted BUT only 16 slices
I've managed to only buy 2 loaves a week now since I got the pullman tin (at £1.21 a pop) but even so that's disgusting!!
I've found if I do buy a 'normal' loaf now I have to buy thick at least to be the same as an old medium sliced..0 -
Wow, I've never thought about this. Thanks for the question. I do notice that we tend to go through certain brands more quickly than others. Now I just need to figure out which one lasts longest. :rotfl:Take the first step.

My OH loves the green Warburtons loaf the one up from the Toastie. It does'nt have many slices (or should I say doorsteps) in it.You can't even put it in the toaster it's so thick and although I think it's far too thick for sandwiches he loves it.It is nice when it's lovely and fresh though, but works out too expensive as it disappears so fast.
Must remember to count the slices next time I go for one.0 -
I've never really thought about how many slices are in the loaves I buy because my pet hate is the size not the thickness of the slices, but the size. I've had the same toastie machine for ages now and I used to be able to put the slices in and the machine would ' seal' the bread around the edges and leave about a quarter of an inch all the way around, now the slices don't fit into the machine and the filling goes everywhere !! New machine me thinks.
Anyway, Sorry for rambling on, my wholemeal loaf that is open at the moment has 20 slices including the crust, still won't fit the toastie machine though
