  • looks like you have a much stronger case than me piano man in terms of getting answers from the CII.

Please come back and let us know how you get on. I know someone on a very similar position to yourself and it would be interesting to hear the outcome.

    cheers

I've received the "mark disclosure" now and can answer part of my original question.

When they say "within 10%" and the pass mark is 55%, they mean in the range 49.5% to 55% rather than 45% to 55%.

    I've requested a remark!
  • Does anyone have any experience of a paper being lost and getting no feedback from the CII?
  • Hi folks

having passed the J04 in april I thought Id have a crack at the J05 in october.

Thot id done not bad in the j05 - better than i had in the J04. Anyway got my results in and not only did i fail but i failed miserably. I couldnt believe it. not even a narrow fail. The feedback indicates that I got less than 50% in 9 of the 15 questions which in no way reflects the level of study i done or how i felt after the exam.

for example the first question on the j05 last time was to effectivley "explain triviality". Same question as 4 exams before. I had memorised the model answer in the past paper and put that down near enough word for word as well as including another half page of other points which were valid to make sure I got the full marks. they say i got less than 50 % for this question!

anyway I phoned to ask if they could check my paper and they called back to say they did and that the mark stood. however because i got a Y, I dont think that they would have remarked only added up the marks already thier.

please dont think this is sour grapes folks. been sitting exams all through school and uni and have failed plenty and it dosent really bother me. what bothers me is that there is such a large disparity between thier assessment of how i done compared to mine. also dont think i have a god given right to pass exams but i studied my !!!! off for this one as i did for the j04.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experiance with the CII and whether its worth pursuing with them. On mind tells me not not bother and just sit it again but another says that why should I when i feel ive extremely been hard done by on this occasion.

is there any data protection and/or freeom of information legislation that anyone knows of wich I can invoke to request a copy of my paper and thier marking of the same.

surely in these days the cii should be legally bound to be much more accountable than they think that they are?

any advices would be greatly appreciated tho i fear that most replies will be of a mind to reccomend to put this one to bed and sit it again in april?

any advices or experiance of the same people

    many thanks

I was wondering if anyone has

I am exactly in the same mind as you with exactly the same situation. Difference is , I took that exam again and got yet another narrow fail ; that now makes 5 consecutive narrow fails ( 3 on G60) There has to be a problem and its definately not my knowledge. I got over 90% twice on the two times i did J05 revisionmate.

I am currently considering what action to take as I am not going to accept this .My legal helpline says there is a case to answer .

Its not sour grapes either , I was confident about the paper on all occasions . In addition , there was not ONE question that required a formula in July 09 J05 , and only a minority of the syllabus was tested.

I mean , Diploma with CII on their pass rate by 2012 .....HOW????

I spoke to the CII, they said unless it's only a mark or two out, it's probably a waste of money to get it remarked.

But they are happy to send me a "mark disclosure" for free to show exactly how far off I was

I did exactly the same in April after failing J05 within 10% my actual mark was 53% so 2% off, I called them and paid the money, within 2 weeks it came back as pass!!! (it can take upto 7 weeks) You get your £72 quid back if its changed to a pass! It took them a month to do that mind !!!

My biggest beef with the CII is that the exams are marked off a crib sheet!! whilst most examiners tend to be retired financial advisers (my old boss does it for them) quite often as much as the CII protest the person marking the exam may not be an expert in that exam!! so if you dont have the model answer down, what you put down may be techincally correct but you dont get a mark!!!. By getting the paper remarked it actually goes to someone who knows the subject!!

I kid you not a colleague failed j06 last year by 10% his remark came back as not only a pass but a distinction!!!

Im doing J04 in October, its quite heavy going, I have been dealing with pensions for nearly 15 years a lot of the stuff is heavy going as its not stuff I come accross on a daily basis. Im going on a J04 study group that Aviva are putting on in a few weeks. Ask your Aviva consultant about them if your a IFA, its free as opposed to the CII which are about £200 I went to the Aviva J05 one and it was really helpfull. Not sure if they do them for all the diploma exams but they deffo do for the pension and investment ones

Yes, this happened to a friend of mine a few years back, was not CII though was IFS. They gave him a free re-sit and £50 off any study material
