CII exams - re-marking / appeals - is it worth it?

I got an X on a CII exam and I note that I can pay £72 to have it re-marked.

Does anyone know what the stats are on re-marks coming back with a different result?

X means "within 10% of pass standard". I'm not sure if "within 10%" means within ten percentage points or actually a tenth of the pass mark.

Thanks

I believe it means it is against the whole points score. i.e. 100 pts available and within 10% would be 10 points or less.

Dont know how the remarking comes out though.

I notice that next year, the exams are moving to quarterly. Still just as expensive though.

I suppose it depends when exam it is. If it's one of the multiple choice exams, I can't see how the marks could be too far different. The questions were either right or wrong and the total is the total. If it's a case study exam, perhaps another marker could find another few marks somewhere.

Was there anything "off" about the exam that you could apply for special circumstances when marking? I ask because when I took my CF1, there was a computer failure, which meant we were 3 hours late going into the exam. I walked out with an X but I appealed for my mark to be changed. The appeal was accepted and I passed.

    Thanks for your answers

It was a case study, not multiple choice. There was nothing "off" with the exam.

I've tried to find a more specialist forum where these things are discussed but I can't

I doubt you will. There are no good forums for advisers. Most have very little activity.

If its a diploma level one then it may be better to resit it given the cost of remarking. Next year the diploma exams are moving to quarterly.

    Hi,
i don't know if this helps but one of my son's GCSE papers and 1 of his AS levels were remarked because he was sure the result was incorrect and sure enough both times his grades were improved. There was a section of his school, ie 25 and 20 boys, who were deemed by the school to have been given the wrong results in Englih Lang. and English Lit. and the school paid for them to be remarked and all of them were upgraded by at least 1 grade and one boy was remarked 40 marks higher!
I know your exam was a professional one, and therfore different, but the fact remains that markers are only human and can make mistakes. I was a marker myself and so I know the score, trust me, if I were in your shoes I would have no hesitation having it remarked. They should refund the fee if you are upgraded. Hope this helps.

  • Hi folks

having passed the J04 in april I thought Id have a crack at the J05 in october.

Thot id done not bad in the j05 - better than i had in the J04. Anyway got my results in and not only did i fail but i failed miserably. I couldnt believe it. not even a narrow fail. The feedback indicates that I got less than 50% in 9 of the 15 questions which in no way reflects the level of study i done or how i felt after the exam.

for example the first question on the j05 last time was to effectivley "explain triviality". Same question as 4 exams before. I had memorised the model answer in the past paper and put that down near enough word for word as well as including another half page of other points which were valid to make sure I got the full marks. they say i got less than 50 % for this question!

anyway I phoned to ask if they could check my paper and they called back to say they did and that the mark stood. however because i got a Y, I dont think that they would have remarked only added up the marks already thier.

please dont think this is sour grapes folks. been sitting exams all through school and uni and have failed plenty and it dosent really bother me. what bothers me is that there is such a large disparity between thier assessment of how i done compared to mine. also dont think i have a god given right to pass exams but i studied my !!!! off for this one as i did for the j04.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experiance with the CII and whether its worth pursuing with them. On mind tells me not not bother and just sit it again but another says that why should I when i feel ive extremely been hard done by on this occasion.

is there any data protection and/or freeom of information legislation that anyone knows of wich I can invoke to request a copy of my paper and thier marking of the same.

surely in these days the cii should be legally bound to be much more accountable than they think that they are?

any advices would be greatly appreciated tho i fear that most replies will be of a mind to reccomend to put this one to bed and sit it again in april?

any advices or experiance of the same people

    many thanks

    parapants:T

I was wondering if anyone has

I had J04 remarked a couple of years ago as I was sure I nailed it.

Came back and still hadnt been marked up - but it was quite interesting as they send the paper back to you with marks for each question and why you didnt get full marks etc.

I spoke to the CII, they said unless it's only a mark or two out, it's probably a waste of money to get it remarked.

But they are happy to send me a "mark disclosure" for free to show exactly how far off I was

There are hundreds of pages of dense text to learn, no-one is ever going to know all of it. It does seem a bit unfair to be tested on your memory of some of the obscure stuff, especially when in a work context, you would be expected to refer to the relevant information rather than just recall it.

But I suppose no exam system is perfect and I suppose from an employers point of view, they help to filter out the less serious employees.

It's quite hard to have worked hard towards these exams and then not pass... I guess there are a lot of us in the same boat (only a minority pass)
