Car Insurance Excess Rip-off

  • CAR WINDSCREEN REPLACEMENT:- Just recently I had the need to have my windscreen replaced. I contacted the "Brokers" who advised that I should use " ****glass " being that they were the Insurers "Authorised" repairers. May I mention at this point... I have been in business for over 40 years and have had a full UK licence since 1965... so ... I have had a "few" cars and windscreens replaced in my days. So... the Authorised repairer told me it would be £260- total. This was revised "up" by £25- when they realised that some "extra" trim bits will be needed....!! But ... my insurers only cover up to £200- of which I need to pay £60... this then turned out that I would be liable for NOT £60- excess ... but .. £60- + £60- + £25 ..!! (My Policy is Fully Comprehensive). All in all it was going to cost me around £145- in "Excess". I then contacted another "BIG" company "Silver Shield" who did the whole job for £130-
I call it a "Rip-Off" the way the Insurers "TRY" to get you to use "Their" bed-mates ... and charge you more than double the "proper" price. Obviously "someone" is doing "very nicely" out of this "cosy" set up...!!
Trading Standards and other Government bodies are "NOT" interested... so
be warned..!! PS: I have dumped both the agents and Insurers half way through the policy and moved on....!! Will NEVER use either of them again .. or indeed " ****glass " ALL "3" are VERY big National names on TV and everywhere... just goes to show... !!

I've never understood why windscreens should be covered, after all they're just another wear part.

Most windscreens come complete with a "trim and adhesive pack"

    Not true.

A windscreen comes on its own.

    How does it become worn?

    Easy years of use.

Just like headlight lenses get pitted and opaque over time so do windscreens.

  • seems a con to me , how can anyone know what the windscreen will cost to replace and its not appropriate to need to phone up to find out a replacement cost of a screen at the time of taking out insurance , it doesnt come into the balance of a good insurance deal or not , so for this alone id say you were shafted and for myself the names are noted and thanks you for the warning

From David Proctor to izzzzythe dog.... how come I never thought of a name like that ... cool ..!! anyway.... many thanks for your "positive" comments....and.. I have yet to be told a "definition" guide line of just what is or is not "good insurance" as opposed to "cheapo" insurance...!!

A Timex tells the time as good as a Rolex..!! but... no doubt one is better made than the other ... however... the cheaper one could... perhaps be better value ..?? subject to ... of course ... personal needs and requirement.. IE ... you are a deep sea diver..for instance.... but ... I digress...!! what is good insurance... anyone..?? please..?? thanks from David.
    unless that is.... you

Autoglass are always a ripoff IMHO, They wanted about £250 from me, I got it done by Nationwide auto windscreens (or something like that) for £110.
  • Wear is damage.

wear and damage are 2 entirly different things. wear happens through time and use. damage can be deliberate or accidental, but more times than not unplanned.

a stone chip or pitting is damage. not wear and tear.
