Orange - end contract transfer to PAYG

It all looked straight forward - 30 days notice, they send out a PAYG sim, phone up to activate sim, number transferred, keep my existing number.

However, their system is taking 72 hours to update so your phone is off for that period and you need to have the IMEI code of an Orange phone to register the sim (as the original contract was on an Orange phone  ). Fortunately I still have the phone but one to watch if you are getting deals, selling the phone and wish to keep the number in future.

Actually, you don't need the IMEI of an Orange phone. Any IMEI will do as long as it is not an Orange phone which is still on contract.

I have done this several times to register Orange PAYG SIM's and you can even use the same IMEI more than once.

    Hope this helps.

I too thought that you could register any phone - their PAYG booklet says as much. However, even with the phone out of contract she insisted that I had to register the PAYG with an Orange handset - perhaps it was affected by the fact I was transferring from Orange Contract to Orange PAYG (at end of 12 months contract). I have done it now and am without a phone for 3 days but at least the contract is now ended and I can now source another deal :).

    Thanks!

Also, there is a change taking place in Orange at the moment. It is now becomming not necessary to register a PAYG SIM card at all. I just bought one of the cheapy Orange Motorola C139's from CPW on-line. As soon as I put the SIM card in the phone and turned it on, it received two text messages. One telling me the brand new phone number and the other giving me the four digit ID code that you need when you ring them. The other message was a standard SIM update.

In the event, because the deal on these phones gives an extra £5, credited in 8 days, I thought I better ring to register it. The guy I spoke to said that the system was changing and no longer did I have to provide a password when ringing them. The ID number was sufficient. He didn't know, or need to know the IMEI of the handset.

    Regards,
