Neighbours music..........driving me crazy!

Hi All

Hoping you can come up with some fab suggestions to save my sanity. Basically we live in a semi detached house and are very friendly with our neighbours. To the extent where we socialise with them either in their house or ours at least one night at weekends and would consider them to be good friends.

Now my problem is this, there is just hubby and I here (we are 24 and 30) and next door there is a lady (early 50's) and her daughter (19) basically her daughters music is driving me crazy!!! I know she is a teenager and I was probably guilty of the loud music thing myself at some point but at least I had good taste! lol Just joking! Its not that her music is played all day or anything but more periodically throughout the day and right now we cant even hear our TV, just boom boom boom boom from her music.

I would feel bad going in there and complaining because we are good friends but at the same time things cant go on like this. Im am off work at the moment and have recently been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis so not really feeling on top form to begin with and the constant banging through the wall is just driving me insane.

Anyone any ideas how I can deal with it?

Is the lady there - or just the daughter?
  • My neighbour is also there. I have been in the house on previous occassions when her music has been very loud. The usually sit in their kitchen and believe it or not it sounds louder in our house than it appears in their kitchen.

just knock and talk to them, we had this problem and the noise has got quietier after knocking on there door. they proberbly dont no how loud it is in yours as the thing with the bass is that the music is quiet in the house but the bass travels and vibrates through walls causing more nuisance

You could invite the mother round for a cuppa and sit where it sounds loudest in your house... My Dad gets on with their neighbours and they have teenage daughters who play really loud music, but only when their Mother's not in... My Dads mentioned it to her and things are a lot better than they used to be.

Definitely mention it to them - I second the idea of getting the mum round for a cuppa... or if it's playing now then go round and ask both of them to come round but leave the music on... explain you don't mind music at all! Just... maybe a little less loud or if they would mind adjusting the bass? we get on really well with our neighbours and noise issues are rare! However one in a while you can hear music and I'm sure they can hear us too - but if it's annoying we just pop round - make a joke of it and there are never any hard feelings... in fact we took the mickey out of one of our neighbours as she had a Grease evening once... just her... singing and dancing along with the soundtrack - we thought it was hysterical and didn't worry about getting her to turn it down :D
But if it happened regularly we'd definitely say something and just suggest they start with turning down the bass :)

If you're on good terms, I would not be afraid to tell them this. Also that you've been feeling unwell lately so it's been more of a problem. You're lucky to be on good terms with them, even if things cool a little it would surely be worth while!

  • We had really loud TENANT neighbours below our last flat and it wasn´t very pleasant. We asked them to keep the noise down but they always refused. We called the landlord and she happened to be a policewoman! :-) She came over and sorted them out. Not long after that the family were evicted. They were awful!! Loud music, parties, nappies thrown out the window, shouting! AH! Glad I´m away from that now!!

I didn't get on with my last neighbour but it didn't stop me going round asking for her to turn it down. I mean there is only so much Seekers and Shania Twain my sanity can cope with.
She took the huff over me asking (very politely I might add) so that resulted in another visit from me asking her what the problem was. She'd previously say hello but then would practically walk backwards to avoid looking at any of me and my family. Went round to ask what the problem was and she ended up in tears! Some people just can't handle confrontation.
The fact that you get on well with your neighbour should make it much easier so invite her round, let her get a taste and ask her if it could be turned down.
Good luck, I know how irritating it can be. I am extremely wary of how loud music/TV is in our house and keep the volume at a reasonable level.

Just be glad it's music and not anything else. I used to hear my delightful neighbours up to 'naughty business' at all times of the day - headboard banging, squeaky bed and the rest! How on earth anyone can find the energy at 6.30am is beyond me - I'm more of an evening person!
We went round to introduce ourselves and confront and the door was slammed in our face! Glad we didn't introduce now unsocial !!!!!!s (they moved out soon after).

You know them well enough to say something - if you don't say anything it won't get any better and that's not going to help you esp. with your RA. Good Luck

We had the same problem but our neighbours always decided that 3.30am was 'their time' It woke us up all the time and I got so fed up of it. My hubby went round to confront them whilst I was at work and asked them to please move the headboard away from the wall honestly some nights I thought that I was on a ferry. They didn't seem at all bothered or embarrassed they did however move the headboard but she still sounds as though so is auditioning for a choir but I guess that you can't have it all.
