Ways to keep drain clear?

We recently moved into a house which has a nice shower, but it doesn't have a hair trap which means it KEEPS getting clogged.

There is only so many times I will sit there with a long piece of metal fishing out the hair... We have tried the drain clearing products, always work well but then the drain gets full again.

Can we get some sort of hair trap/similar?

I'm not very good with DIY in case you haven't already guessed! The shower has got a lift out "cover" which does nothing except stop feet/shampoo bottles etc going down the drain...

If you Google 'Shower Hair Trap' you will come up with exactly what you are looking for.

Do a search for "hair catcher" - sort of thing available from Kleeneze, Betterware, Lakeland etc etc or somewhere like Wilkinsons or any good home wares or hardware store.
  • You should be able to take the chrome looking top off the waste outlet - it should just lift off.
Then when its off you should see a section that can be lifted out, this usually traps all the hair, the pull out trap has a little bar on the top that you pull.
Be careful when removing I find it helps to twist as you pull it up.

Take a look at this VIDEO

In reply to inearlygave up, yes I agree that it is a useful video. But the vast majority of showers, particularly older ones, will not have that particular type of strainer waste. I can imagine that there would be a lot completely bewildered people out there, who have a standard shower waste, and cannot do what the video suggests. There seem to be a large proportion of users of this forum who seem to be almost proud of the fact that they 'can't do DIY'.

Now that's not on! - Smack your legs!

No-one was born knowing how to do general maintenance and repairs and not everyone has the aptitude, or physical ability, for DIY.

At least credit posters with common sense enough to ask for help and advice when they need it. And if they can't do the work themselves at the very least by asking here, they usually gain enough background knowledge to deal intelligibly with tradesmen.

I agree with Suzy M - there are little plastic jobbies that you buy for about £1 that just sit on top of the plughole.
  • The plastic ones that the OP mentioned might not fit the shower in question,More information is needed-The OP might have a walk in shower with a 5" circle drain
