Am so cross with my bank

I'm so cross with my bank, I went £50 over my overdraft limit for a few days before I noticed and transfered more money into it. I looked at my statement and they're charging me £165 overdraft fees! I think this is appalling, how do they expect people to get out of debt if they keep whacking on charges like these? I'll probably go over again this month thanks to this charge.
Do you think they'll waiver this charge if I write to them and explain i'm expecting a baby in 2 months, it's Christmas and I need to stop being charged in order to get out of this mess?

I wouldn't hold your breath. I suggest you try borrow money from a relative or something to get you by instead of going over your limit again. The get a clai in to recover the charges. It won't be looked at until the court case is over but at least you'll be on the list. The only other way to get them to look at your case sooner would be to claim financial hardship. Banks tend to be pretty ruthless in these cases.

£165 for a few days for going overdrawn by £50 seems to be excessive in my opinion! Do they give a breakdown of the charges?

I would definitely ring and ask them to waive the charges if it is the first time you've gone over. They do seem excessive!

  • I haven't received the breakdown in the post yet (or I've subconciously ignored the letter!). No it's Lloyds.
Do you know what, i think i'm going to phone them and just beg. They can only say no. I might also threaten to close my account and see if that makes them shift. Grrrr

I did this once and they did waive the charges when I rang and said that I felt they were ridiculous, especially as I had never been overdrawn before. Threaten to move banks if they won't budge.

If you go over your limit the charges are steep and can accrue quickly. The charges are per transaction for example if you are like many people and have your direct debits planned to coincide with payday then it doesn't take very long for charges to mount up.
You should do as other posters have said and at least query the charges.

I got a charge once (my one and only ever bank charge) for a cheque bouncing. Had written it from the wrong account. Got charged £35 but managed to get it waived as it was the first time.

find out who the chief executive of your bank is and write to him. he will probably never read the letter but it will be handled by his office - you are much more likely to get a refund
