hi guys and girls, need a bit of advice.
had my m.o.t this morning and my 6 year old stilo scraped through, needs new brake pads at the front (worn but legal-they will get fixed asap) and two front tyres.
with brake pads its easy, we have a very good motor factor close by, i can get them very easily, but the tyres are confusing me.
the garage is a small-ish mot specialist, but they do tyres as well, they said if i get in touch with my tyre size i can get a quote, they only really sell barnham (sp?) tyres, (continental's budget brand apparently) and for mine is about £40-ish a corner, only knew 16s i didnt know full sizes, said i will get exact sizes and stuff and phone for proper quote when i know when getting paid (i already know its friday, wanted to speak to my dad as he is a car expert, but he away all day and not on his mobile)
i've done 20000 miles on pirelli p6000s and the fronts are on their way out (almost all town driving) is this normal? what is a good replacement tyre at a good price bearing in mind my tyres are 205 55 r16 91 h

20000 is OK. Banham are a bit poor. Kumho (Korean brand) are a good budget brand and are being discounted heavily at the moment. I've been quoted £63 per tyre for Kumhos the same size as yours for my Mondeo. Also got quoted £70 for some Dunlop SP3000's which have a more directional tread but the tyre review sites put them lower than the Kumho. A guy I know with a Subaru Impreza WRC has Kumhos on and he doesn't put rubbish on his cars so I might give it a shot.0

Beware of cheapo tyres, some of them offer shocking grip levels.
Kumho are pretty good, I had a set of Ecsta R somethings.
Personally I prefer to buy top brands from Blackcircles or Protyre because I can get them for around £50 per wheel fitted.
20K is good.Happy chappy0 -
i had kumho tyres on my first car, citroen ax, did 10k miles on them and sold the car, i would have got them again had i not got a decent deal on p6000s. its only 2 front ones and its probably about £150 to sort out the fronts out with them, my tread is still legal on the p6000s at the front (passed mot with an advisory to sort them) so might ask whichever garage sorts them to keep the better of the p6000s and put it in the boot for me
trouble is the place that i got my old kumho's from are now only doing banham
blackcircles want £56.75 for a v rated kumho and £64.01 for a w rated one, is that any good?things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back thenMercilessKiller wrote: »BH is my best mate too, its ok

About what I was quoted including fitting from local tyre spot but I get the feeling there's a bit of discounting going on.0

that would give me immense satisfactionblackcircles is by far the cheapest, the mot garage might be cheaper but they only do one make and it aint kumho

Barum will be the cheapo's, and they're not great. A good mid range tyre would be Falken ZE912, Firestone, Federal SS595 or Kumho. Check out tyre reviews .co.uk for impartial advice. The P6000s got aweful reviews, so i'd change them too if you can! V rated tyres go up 149mph and W rated 170+ so you'd never (in theory) need either. H rated would suffice unless you plan on taking a trip to some German Autobahns?!
Got my Falkens for £30 each fitted...but im in the trade:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. Please don't be offended if that opinion differs from yours, but feel free to click the 'Thanks' button if it's at all helpful!0 -
Your Pirelli's have done well to get to 20,000...! They normally only last as long as the model number...0

Did you mention the BlackCircles was cheaper, to the fitting station - they usually offer to match/beat/alternative, so they get the business - when I've asked, anyway.
Check http://www.justtyres.co.uk on their Todays Offers page & download the extra discount voucher, too. Avons for under £70 inclusive of the valve/balance/scrap old tyre, which some places don't always mention, when you ask prices!
& don't forget http://www.etyres.co.uk they're trying hard to do 'deals'!!

barums are rubbish, poor grip and wear out fast.
you could have federal super steel 595's for around £45 a tyre fitted.
thats what ive got on my focus, same size as yours with a higher speed rating.
fitted locally.
20k out of your old pirellis is good,i got that from my original pirellis on my focus.and that was rotating them....work permit granted!0 -
