Hi,
i have upgraded my hard drive and since I can't get any sound out of my pc.
I have an internal soundcard on a motherboard that is a few years old now - VIA VT82C686A. It keep searching for files which it says are on my Win98SE disc - the files it asks for are:
swmidi.sys
kmixer.sys
dmusic.sys
I dont have the installation disc and can't seem to find these files. I think they are on a file called driver20.cab?????
Do I need these files to get my sound working?
I have bought a budget 5.1 soundcard and installed that tonight but this doesn't seem to be getting a response either. If I open windows media player and try playing something it comes up with an error of "no audio hardware is available or responding".
please help before my last hairs get pulled out!

The Drivers are missing as you didnt back up the drivers or did you write them down.0

Hi,
which drivers do you mean are missing??
I have 2 drive on my pc and I used a utility to copy and save all my drivers to the other drive. I have installed the driver from that drive but still get a blank. In system properties is it showing the VIA Enhanced Audio Controller as working with no conflicts. The new sound card with drivers is also not responding. Is the microsoft files that is causing the problem and if so where do you get them??0 -
If you have onboard sound and a PCI sound card you will have to disable the onboard sound as there is a conflict, if you saved the onboard sound driver correctly there was no need to buy a PCI sound card.0

Intel - I tried this but still no joy?? Not sure where to next?0

if i go via the control panel to multimedia - preferred audio playback devices, it only have a wave modem and no sign of mu onboard sound card or the one new one I just added???0

do i need the .sys files listed above at all??
I find it odd that the new sound card isn't picked up and working. I think there's more to it.
Thanks for all your help so far0 -
I would imagine they're in the VIA driver package.
Your choice really. You can either forget about the onboard sound and get your new card working or you can fix the onboard sound for now and then fix the PCI sound after.

TOG - thanks for your help.
I did a re-install and all files picked up fine. I guess sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.
