Did our own hpi and its showing clear, just on mycarcheck.com is showing s/r undamaged. We are told the owner had the keys stolen from his house and this remains on record as part of the cars history as there was an insurance pay out on it.

Dont believe anything you are told by the salvage company, do your own investigating. Try to contact the previous owner, insurance company etc and dont pay to much. Whatever has happened to the car, it wont be worth as much. Just bear this is mind when your sell it.
  • HPI do not report on vehicles that are stolen and recovered only mycarcheck.com do this. And they only charge £3.95, HPI are £19.95.

Stolen and recovered is important as the car may have been used to transport drugs (there could still be traces in the car, imagine that being picked up by border control if you go abroad, or the thief may have a set of keys waiting for an opportunity, see the Home Office website, it says 85% of all vehicles stolen in the UK are stolen with the keys...worrying!

Stolen and recovered still come up as recorded with HPI.

  • I'm not sure ablut s/r but if the can has been damaged / repaired through the insurance this will be shown on the front page of the V5.
  • Stolen and recoverd is not reported by HPI only if the vehicle was a total loss, HPI have admitted this in a newspaer article
  • A vehicle that has been written of Cat A, B, and C require a VIC check, cat D does not, so this does not show in the V5.

I've got a cat C stolen recovered car that came up on a HPI.

Why would they record cars that had not been written off anyway???

If your car is stolen, and then found and repaired by the insurance company it's not a write off and it isn't recorded on vcar.

If your car is stolen, and then found, but the insurance company decide to write it off, it is recorded on vcar.

It would be a bit unfair if insurance compaines added cars that they've decided to repair to the register, and defeat the whole point of it.

Given that car dealers are gagging for business at the moment, why even consider salvage?

  • Stolen and recovered are not shown on the HPI VCAR register (unless a total loss), VCAR is HPI's own register and nothing to do with Experian (AA) or mycarcheck.com. Of course a buyer should know if it has been stolen recovered (See previous reply) but HPI do not show this up, although they do have the data.

If a vehicle is to be recorded as a total loss or not is up to the insurance company and then it gets added to the ABI register that companies subscribe
