Good point about not resetting the oddometer.

I agree with the others, get a cheap satnav that reads current speed, will be more accurate than the speedo, even if slightly behind.
I wouldnt change the gearbox just for that;)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

The offence that article is relating to is driving in excess of the statutory limit, not driving without a speedo. All that's saying is that if you speed and your speedo's not working, it's not a valid defence.
The article clearly states that if one is stopped for speeding and one advises that ones speedo is not working, then one has commited the... "additional offence of having a faulty speedometer in a vehicle being driven on the public highway"

Stating that one has commited the "additional offence of having a faulty speedometer in a vehicle being driven on the public highway" would appear to indicate that it is an offence to drive a vehicle on the public highway with a faulty speedometer? ... No?

A quick recap, trying to remember what the guy who is working on it said, is that we have a 2001 car but we were sent a 2005 gearbox they work off sensors so we put the correct sensor in to find its still not working and then we find out the 2001 car runs on the speedo on a ring on the gear box. Hope ive remembered that right.

Do you still have the old gearbox? Could the sensor system from that be fitted to the 2005 one? Most of the time when sensor systems are altered they use the same fittments as the old ones.

Alternative is retrofitting an SPA speedo whivh works off a Hall sensor on the driveshaft.

Slightly off at a tangent, but I had a speedo 'go' whilst up in the Highlands a few years back (in the days before sat-nav).

Was rather scary driving all the way back to Manchester without a Scooby what speed I was doing.

Involved a lot of tail-gating cars through speed cameras, in the hope that they weren't speeding themselves.

Got a new unit fitted and was quite surprised that there was no endorsement of the log book - or at least a sticker on the dashboard - to say that the mileage shown was not reflective of how far the car had travelled.

Obviously I mentioned this fact when I traded the car in a couple of years later....

No we dont have the old gearbox, the guy working on it is doing it as a favour, altho his prices dont seem to reflect that! And he scrapped the old one.

I stand corrected, I was going off a faulty speedo not being an immediate prohibition on a PSV. Thanks for the correction.

It isn't an immediate prohibition on a PSV. Under tacho regs, you can continue with your journey with a defective tacho as long as it is repaired soonest, even if that's a few days.

That particular piece of text does not say that it is illegal to drive with a faulty speedo, although Conor's post does.

It is illegal however there's leeway allowed in law for you to get it fixed as soon as possible. The same applies to tachographs in PSVs and HGVs. You would probably find you're issued with a pink slip or vehicle rectification notice which would give you 14 days.

It does have to be a working speed indicating device, doesn't have to be the original. An add on or satnav will surfice

But given the fact that the speedo and odometer are part of the same unit, what was to stop me leaving the broken unit in the car (assuming I could have used a sat-nav to ensure I kept legal speed wise) so that I had a very 'low mileage' vehicle when I came to sell?
