Whats the punishment for a non working speedo?

Car isnt being used as speedo isnt working but what is the punishment for being caught with no speedo?

No its the second car and DH's drives a truck for a living so no way would he risk it. Im just curious since its happened.

Assuming the speedo reads zero, I'm trying to imagine how anyone could possibly be caught for using a vehicle with a non working speedo?

Even if stopped for a random vehicle check, how would plod know the speedo wasn't working unless they decided to take it for a run round the block.

Thats what someone said to us when we said it wasnt working! I read it was an MOT failure and illegal but couldnt see anything else about punishment.

How can it be an MOT failure given that the Speedometer isn't tested?

Anyway.... The following would appear to indicate that having a non functioning speedo on the public highway is an offence.

Seems a grey area then, i wasnt sure if it was tested but i read on another forum it was an MOT failure. I tried googling it but couldnt get a precise site with info so turned here as always.

Perhaps they get stopped for speeding and say "sorry officer but my speedo isn't working";)

The gear box we have put in it isnt compatible with the car so the speedo isnt working so now we need to look for a new gearbox. As the situation has arisen and its been spoken about for hours (how annoyed we are) we were curious. The car will not be used, so no need to worry about being caught we just wanted to know.

Whilst I had better add the caveat that I would never condone driving a car without a speedo, as long as you have GPS/Sat Nav to indicate your speed, as long as the speedo reads zero, I doubt there is a snowballs chance in hell of a person being caught and charged for said faulty speedo.

Yeah that has to be the cheapest option - although the odometer won't add on the miles.
