None; draw out $Jam in cash here.

Be warned, it's very small fry; when we were there $Jam100 was worth about a quid.

Nationwide Credit & Debit cards are one of the best, they have no transaction fees, and you get the Visa wholesale rate, I always use the credit card in the US.

I think the post office credit card is still fee free too.

I'm not sure how widely accepted plastic is in Jamica, I suppect in the resorts there is no problems, but venture out and I suspect it is very different, I'm sure someone on here will have been and would know more.

I would be very careful about taking lots of cash with you, you are rarely cover on insurance for much more than £200 or so.

    Ooooh, by whom?

Once you get anywhere away from the hotel complexes, if you ain't got Jamaican Dollars then you're in a deep hole.

I understand it is not recommended to venture away from the hotel complexes anyway, unless you know the area very well and have locals with you?????

And I believe your right about the $, it's widely accepted in the hotels, but not anywhere else.

  • We are going to a couples resort and not planning on venturing off resort...so just need a credit card for any hotel extras i.e. spa treatments....

Two Canadians at our Sandals complex in Dunns River Falls wandered out to the security guard at the entrance to the complex and said "we'd like to see a little of your island, which is the best direction you suggest we take?".

The security guard simply pointed back into the complex and said "do a 180 degree turn and go and sit back down on your sun loungers".

    True story.

However, if you go out on supervised tours you WILL need Jamaican dollars (we tried paying for some clothes in a Kingston mall with $US and the girl looked at us as though we'd offered her dog $h1t as payment).

Take US dollars, you can exchange US for Jamaican dollars at your resort no problems. Only leave the resort if you're on a trip planned your tour operator
  • Hi Penny,

First of all I hope u have a fab holiday, i got married at Couples Swept Away this year.

When we went away we took us$'s with us and stayed on resort. The only times we left the resort was when we went on excursions and all the places accepted us$'s. We went to places like dolphin cove, dunns river falls, ys falls, black river (to see the crocs), the rum factory and they all accept us$'s if we wanted to buy anything. Plus the tour organisers normally have a rest stop which normally has a shop/place to buy food and they also accepted us$'s.

Hope u have a fab holiday, the people are lovely and everything is 'no probelm mon'....
  • Thanks Melissa, we are going to get married there as well on valentines day
