Feeding a Puppy

Hi all,

We picked up our first puppy yesterday (I've had two as a kid before!) and we are currently feeding it a totally dry mix called Beta Puppy.

Any recommendations on the best food for a 9 week old CKC?

EDIT: The food is what the breeder was feeding him.

Is he eating it? If so keep giving it to him but sometimes they stop if you give them titbits from your own plate which they like more. Some breeds eat everything put in front of them others are very picky.

He is eating it, not giving him anymore than 3 handfuls per day. I wont be feeding him from my own plate ever. I don't fancy upsetting him by changing his food so soon after leave his old home.

What about for treats? The DW picked up some puppy treats but I read the back before going to give him one and they are for 3 months and over - so they are under the sink for a couple of weeks.


The puppy is loving is bright green chew toy - going mad with it currently!

I've raised pups on Beta and they did really well on it. Was there a reason you want to change from it?
Seems a shame to change if the pup is eating and is healthy.... with all the stress of changing homes and setteling in it's good to keep the feeding routine unchanged.

Will take a photo tomorrow for you all. We just this second placed the puppy (We've named him Bailey) down and he has walked over to his crate - off to sleep by the looks of it! Don't fancy disturbing him so close to bed time!

I guess there is no real need to change his food - providing I can get hold of it easily, got a big bag of food from the breeder!

Looking forward to a sleepless night again, we had the crate in our bedroom last night - took 20 min to relax him and he woke up at 1-2am.... I woke up at 8am and Bailey has still fast asleep!

The plan for tonight is to get him all sleepy, place him down and let him walk into him crate. When he is sleeping, lock the door and go up the bed. If he wakes up in the night - put him outside to pee/poo and get him all sleepy again!

I feed my puppy beta puppy food, the breeder fed him that too

I used to give it to him soaked in warm water so it was soggy for him to eat but he has it dry now.

Awwwwwww a real cutie.
Sounds like the trainings going well iKennett, crate training wasn't well known when I got my first pup and I made every mistake in the book! Took me 18 years to get up the guts to have another pup and he loved his crate, it made everything so much easier - he still loves it now he is 13!

I agree with the other posters about keeping Bailey on the Beta if he is eating it, but just wanted to say he is such a cutie - hope you have lots of fun with him!

Treats- carrots,small pieces of broccoli, parsnips, brussels etc - honest get him used to raw veg now so you always have a low fat treat for him

High reward treats are tiny cubes of cheese and bits of sausage,liver,chicken etc - to be used for training only

Bonios are a good, Also pigs ears,jerky, tripe, raw hide (always have chews available as puppy's chew. Try to avoid those high processed treats that are high coloured and look like nothing you could put a name to (denta sticks included in those)

Go steady with pigs ears as they're quite fatty and can upset young, sensitive tummies
