We have a rescued weimaraner, had him 4 years now, we are his 3rd and final home, he came to us at 2 year old having already had 2 previous homes  but the previous owners loss has been our gain, he is a wonderful dog. I cant fault his manners and training, whoever had him before have trained him well. The only problem is,typically he doesnt like to be left. We knew very little about his history except that he had lived with cats, another dog and kids, and his last owner would leave him from 9.30 in the morning until 3.30 in the afternoon  I couldnt possibly leave him this long. Hes a pleasure to walk, is great with our cats and kids, and when we got an american cocker to keep him company on walks, (as he always seemed lonely running around the fields by himself), he took to her brilliantly, she has him well and truly wrapped around her paw :rotfl: hes almost like a henpecked husband. I know we have been extremly lucky with Thunder, but would rescue a weimie again, as we got a lot of help and support from weimaraner rescue in the early days, but I dont think we'll ever be as lucky again.
Good luck with Tilly, I'm looking forward to seeing pics.

Aww Tilly is a nice name, I like Matilda & have often thought of Tilly for short! I like Thunder too! When I was at the bus stop after visiting my rescue in my pre adoption visits a guy walked by with one, it was huge! Lovely Dog tho! Can't wait to read updates & to the above, too right their loss is your (And my) gain, the previous Owners of Chaya lost an amazing Dog!
  • If you're a potential weimaraner owner, it will be useful to be aware that they can be outstanding family pets, but not so much if you have breeding in your mind. It would also be essential what problems could your weimaraner develop along the way.

Have you picked your puppy up yet?
  • Hi,

Just to wish you all the best with Tilly in the future. Weims are wonderful, naughty, loving, naughty, loyal, naughty, brave......:D

I wouldn't be without one, well with Blue I don't get a chance, he even tries to follow me into the bathroom and lies down outside the door waiting for me!!!

I would recommend that you look at the forum on Weimaraner world. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people on there and they are always willing to give help. It's very informative and reassuring to read that others have been / are going through what you are.

I got Blue as a rescue, so am envious of your puppy moments! Wrinkly bodies, puppy breath and those Blue, blue eyes. Take loads of photos as they grow so quick!

And lastly, train, train and keep on training! It really pays dividends in the end.

Best of luck, please add photos!

I have 2 Weimaraners and they are amazing dogs, our original dog is 7 years old, almost 2 years ago we rehomed another Weimaraner who belonged to a family member who's marriage broke down and couldnt look after the dog, at the time i had just had a baby (4 months old) and wasnt sure about introducing another dog into the family, i didnt know how it would be around the baby as my family member never had any kids and i wasnt sure how my own Weimy would react to a new dog in the house, but it couldnt have been any better, they immediately took to each other, both my weimys are girls and coincidentally are related, they share the same great grandmother, about 5 years ago we sent our original dog to one of the best gundog trainers in Scotland and after 3 weeks all they managed to do was teach her to walk better on the lead, they said they now realised why they never took on that many Wemiys to train as they were so strong willed, i have to admit that my dogs look after my daughter as if she were their own and i am reassured by this, they really are an amazing breed of dog and i cant picture myself having any other dog.
  • I also had a weimaraners, they are quite sensitive to food but they are the best bodyguards for me.

I don't think luck has too much to do with how good your dog is :)

It sounds like you've worked hard to maximise his potential and work with his character rather than against it.

In my opinion people like you are nearly always lucky with their animals ;)
