This is because most dogs are pets now. How many people really take their Weimaraner out hunting? I think hunting with dogs is illegal now anyway.

    Change hunting to shooting.

But regardless we still have a hunt.

Yes, Weimie's are used mainly in shoots. They're a pointer/retriever so they'll find the game then retrieve after it's shot. They'll work all day long. If you look up the W.C.G.B. site they have details of field trials etc.

It amazes me that one poster can run crying from a thread that wasnt very flattering towards her choice of dog, yet has the brass neck to do the same to another poster about their choice of breed:confused::confused::confused:

    weimies, hhmm.

they were originally bred to track and point deer. they do not do packs, they work on their own with the handler. therefore they are good at problem solving with little direction and make their own decisions. they are loyal yet can appear aloof to those they dont know.they tolerate other dogs but prefer not to have canine company.

    or,

they !!!! off at the first oportunity and you wont see them for dust. they will come back when they are ready. if they see other dogs when out ,they will either ignore or if pushed will tell in no uncertain terms to leave well alone.
they will counter surf, open doors to get to the bedroom and if you find them on the bed, will act as though its their rightful place and who are you to tell them otherwise. if you leave them in the kitchen while you are in another room though, they will cry and scratch at the door. if another dog sits on 'their' sofa, expect blood.
  • I am a novice dog owner and bought a weim as I had always wanted one, we took 2 years to research the breed and pick a renowned breeder from the line we wanted (Sireva) and now my dog is 2 years old and he is WONDERFUL! we have 2 children age 9 and 5 and deliberately waited until our youngest was a bit older as we knew how protective they can be.

Milo is just fab, he is loving and loyal, as soft as a brush and I can let him off the lead and he will do as he is told, he comes to me when I ask him to and he knows where he sits in the 'pack', he is great with other dogs, never really barks and is fantastic with the kids, they rag him about sometimes but he just lets them he is so soft. I adore him and would highly recommend this breed but you do have to know what you are letting yourself in for.

We always stuck to our guns when training him as a puppy and it has paid off, I have never treated him as another child (as he is not he is a dog!) and they need loads of exercise as they drive you mad in the house if they don't get it (will chew cushions, kids toys etc)

They just want to be with you all the time and he follows me round the house wherever I go which can be a bind at times! He is not dominant at all and knows exactly where he stands in our family but I think a lot of this is how we trained him, were consistent and socialised him with children and other dogs from when we got him.

Bad points are, yes they are hard work, it is like having another child to watch, make sure the gates are shut to your garden otherwise they will run off (Milo always comes back when I shout him but I worry he is going to run onto the road and get hurt), training from a pup is really important, its all very well giving them loads of cuddles and letting them sit on your knee as a pup but they grow so quick into a big dog and will still expect to be on your knee!!! so you have to resist the temptation! they will become boss if you let them so you have to be in control all the time from them being a pup and make sure they know you are boss or they will run rings round you

the constant wanting to be with you all the time can be tiresome sometimes, they get bored if left alone for too long and will destroy things in the home, also be careful what you feed a weim, they are prone to gastric bloat, hip dysplasia and stomach problems so only give them one type of food and stick to it, if you have to change their feed, do it gradually, never let them eat for 40 mins before or after a walk/run

Make sure you get yours from a decent breeder (they should vet you fiercely and have a waiting list) and you should be fine, they will give you years of love and enjoyment

Great post, Milliesmonster! I don't have Weimeraners, but I do have several of another large HPR breed. The HPR's are extremely intelligent, but can be cunning and stubborn with it! Early socialisation and training that is firm, fair and consistent from the get go is fundamental to having a well adjusted HPR. I've seen some of my breed who didn't have this and by the time they are teenagers, they are downright delinquent and an absolute nightmare for their owners. You also have to learn to read them like a book and be one step ahead of them at all times so that you can head off their cunning ploys at the pass! :D Also, a lot of quality exercise is essential too, and by quality exercise I mean, for example, taking them somewhere where they can be safely let off lead and exercise their hunting instincts by seeking out rabbits etc. An HPR won't be happy with walks on lead around the block.

But get the training right and meet its needs and you will end up with a fabulous dog and the rewards will be immense. Oh, and my breed follow us around incessantly too and thoroughly enjoy the comforts of our laps! :rotfl:

We shall expect lots & lots of pics, so many that you may not have time to exercise her! What name will she have or are you waiting until she's home? How much walking do they have as young Pups? It is exciting! I just got a rescue Terrier & she's great, congrats x
