The one we used to buy was called Castles Ginger Wine, not sure if it is available now though. It was a small brown bottle (concentrate) with a yellow label and was made as the OP suggested.

Thats the stuff. I used to buy it in the North East at the chemist. You add sugar and a gallon of water. Very hot it was.
  • I can get any amount of ginger essence friar tucks ... Mail me... If you want to know where

Another craving I've been having recently..

When I was little, my Mum used to bring Ginger wine concentrate/essence back from our Christmas holiday in Scotland. She doesn't think you can get it anymore after asking relatives up there. Bought from a chemist too. Any of our Scotch readers know different?

I seem to recall it coming in a small bottle, no bigger than say a normal medicine bottle. To make the wine all you had to do was add the concentrate to a big saucepan of water and add tons of sugar, simmer, done!.

    Raspberry wine was aswesome too!

PS. Mum's just reminded me, it was non alcoholic

    :)
I only heard of it for the first time last night when a customer asked me for it in Edinburgh, the place to get it is the coop, but best to google it as usual. Hope this helps

Found this thread while searching if this stuff is still available. My mother used to make it every new year for us youngsters while the older folks got the real stuff. One thing I found out when I became one of the "older folk" was it was a remarkable hangover cure. It probably still is a curer - just I haven't had the chance to find out as I haven't had any for years. At least 9 years. The reason I know it will be 9 years is I have a small bottle of this in my kitchen cupboard with a "use before" date of September 2001. I'm tempted to make the stuff up regardless. What harm can it do - famous last words.
I've never resurrected a two year old thread before.
EDIT : Didn't realise there was a second page.
