The one we used to buy was called Castles Ginger Wine, not sure if it is available now though. It was a small brown bottle (concentrate) with a yellow label and was made as the OP suggested.

I lifted this from the digitalspy forum:

Didn't Robbie Burns call the Scots "Scotch"? If it's good enough for him... :p

    ;)

    People are Scottish.

It appears to have been the case before Sir Walter Scott became involved that Scotch and Scottish were interchangable, i.e. no-one was particularly concerned if they were called Scotch or Scottish. Usage has changed since then.
  • Another craving I've been having recently..

When I was little, my Mum used to bring Ginger wine concentrate/essence back from our Christmas holiday in Scotland. She doesn't think you can get it anymore after asking relatives up there. Bought from a chemist too. Any of our Scotch readers know different?

I seem to recall it coming in a small bottle, no bigger than say a normal medicine bottle. To make the wine all you had to do was add the concentrate to a big saucepan of water and add tons of sugar, simmer, done!.

    Raspberry wine was aswesome too!

PS. Mum's just reminded me, it was non alcoholic

I had the same craving this year - I loved it whe I was little.

We found it in Holland and Barrett at the Metro Centre on Friday - was about £1.85 a bottle - it's called riddles Ginger Compound.

Hiya its called Yu-Lade and you can get it from the co op. Have not seen the ginger one recently but have just got 2 bottles of the blackcurrant one which is delicious. It is in a tiny wee bottle (100mls) with Yu-Lade Blackcurrant Flavouring Concentrate. I got mine from the Co Op in Tannochside Uddingston.

    Hi Carolannjo :)
Yu-Lade has jogged my Mums memory, thanks! We're in Yorkshire though, I'll have to try a few Co-ops in the area and maybe pester some relatives in Scotland :)

    Ohhh, that sounds lovely. :T

I'll be out that direction tomorrow (going to a funeral in Holytown, then calling in to see my Auntie in Viewpark), I think I'll pop in and get a bottle on the way home. Although I'll have to avoid the card shop next door, they always have fab Christmas stuff but I'd spend a fortune, if I had the money in the first place. :rotfl:

Auld Rabbie may well have done ... way back when, lol. I don't know many Scottish people nowadays who'd be happy to be called 'Scotch'. However, it's not particularly offensive, as I said in my original post. Also, 'people' may be Scottish, but the Scottish race as a whole would tend to be referred to as 'The Scots' by anyone who's not actually from here!

  • Thanks for reminding me about this - I go back to the 50s! Parents used to call it a cordial I think and gave it to us kids while they had their wee sherry! I have had Ginger Cordial from Julian Graves it is called Rochester Ginger Cordial and is very nice. Unfortunately the Ashford (Kent) one has closed - may have to try the alcoholic stuff eg Crabbies or Stones, it's very warming and very good if one is suffering from nausea!

Rochester Ginger is warming on a cold day and has a bite to the back of your throat if you drink it too quick ;) I used to work in JG and had to sell it and I sold loads of it ;)

  • Yes, when I was a boy, my Mum would make Ginger Wine from a concentrate which came in a slightly tapered, textured bottle which I recall had a white label with green and red writing. Was this what you had in mind?
