i once put a coat that was dry clean only in the washing machine at a low setting and took it out as soon as the cycle stopped then hung it to dry and reshaped whilst damp then steamed it afterwards turned out good as.

Do you have a clothes steamer? If you can't hang it outside on a windy day,a steamer might help.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • What colour is the coat? You could sprinkle bicarb of soda liberally over the coat, leave it overnight, and then shake/brush off the bicarb.Most/all of the bicarb should come out.

My book on the uses of bicarb mentions getting rid of the smell of smoke, but this involves soaking in a bicarb solution.

What have you decided to do?
  • I have washed woollen coats, on a gentle cycle, using delicate wash liquid and cold water only. Has always turned out alright.

I did get a purple leather coat once given by a friend who smoked, I hung it on the line in the fresh air, then hung a little sachet or baking soda on the hanger next to the coat and put a plastic suit cover over it - it took about 10 days but it did lose the cigarette smell.
No buying unnecessary toiletries 2014. Epiphany on 4/4/14 - went into shop to buy 2 items, walked out with 17!

Hang it outside or in the garage for a few days, then spray with some perfume and leave for a few more days. Sure it will be OK after a while
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.
  • Buy a bag of cat litter, put the coat and the litter in a binbag, let the litter absorb the odour, then brush and vacuum the litter out of the coat.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • thanks
im going to febreeze it and hang it on the line tomorrow. xx

That's it. I give in. Old style has officially done my head in. I was skimming through the headings in this section and read 'smelly coat' as 'smelly goat'.
