I have a 7 year old Huntaway. He is a beautiful, loyal dog, and honestly the easiest dog I have ever owned. He stands slightly taller than a GSD but is often mistaken for a GSD x or Rotty X. He can be very playful with our dalmation but also a total couch potato and sleeps on the sofa with his legs in the air! I live on a farm and he never runs off, it's just not in his nature but they are very vocal with herd animals, as is their breeding, and he will bark at my horses. He lives happily with a cat, loves children and basically everyone really! He loves to swim in the river and get filthy! Oh yeah they do tend to shed alot but if you have GSDs i'm sure you're used to it! Touch wood he's always been very healthy but being fairly big I think he may suffer with his joints when he's older (I feed him cod liver oil). He is very clever and can open any door, he just lets himself out for a wee! Basically they are fab dogs and make good family pets but obviously like all herding dogs do need long walks although I would recommend a Huntaway over a border collie anyday as they are nowhere near as intelligent (sorry Joey!), energetic or demanding. Obviously he is 7 so has quietened down a bit now. But don't get me wrong, he'll playfight and chase with the dalmation in the garden for hours on end and loves his toys. As for agility I think a Huntaway could be good, but being larger dogs I would wait till his bones are fully developed before you start anything. I'm sure it'll be great fun. Anyway - i've bored you enough, I just thought i'd share my experiences as I know there aren't many people who keep them just as pets so i seem to be a bit of an expert now lol. Enjoy yours, you truly will have a friend for life there xx0

My first dog was a huntaway - and noone believed me that he was a proper breed (even my vets that I was using at the time) until the vets had a NZ locum, she ran into the waiting room and said that she hadnt seen a Huntaway since she left home 6 years previously....
They are wonderful dogs - I wish I had known what I know now then - bless him, I rescued him from my then boss (he had been bought to take over from their sheepdog, but he was scared of sheep,so they locked him in a stable and fed him every three days (basically when they remembered) and were going to shoot him. He was my learning curve, and by heck it was a big one!! He died when we had just begun to make a breakthrough with his housetraining, I went over the road and didint realise he was in the garden - he ran up to follow me, jumped the wall and landed in the road,in the path of a volvo... he made it to the vets table, then thumped his tail, licked my hand and died........
VERY VERY happy years ahead for you with yours, and well done for having him.

Huntaways are terrific, quite a few sheep farmers in the Lake District have taken to using them alongside their sheepdogs. They have a neat trick of running across the backs of a herd of sheep when they're rounding up and need to get from one side of the flock to the other in a hurry. They're also pretty good at 'gobbing off' at the sheep !
Kiwis reckon that Huntaways are more intelligent than the blokes they work with, and there's a terrific strip cartoon about a farmer and his Huntaway in an NZ newspaper - sorry I can't remember which one.
Enjoy your dog, expect to play Wallace to his Gromitt !.....................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)
