A Huntaway is a NZ Sheepdog so will be extremely active and have a herding mentality. Maybe you should have done more research into this before "rescuing" him. Expect him to have the same behaviour and energy levels of a Border Collie and start training him NOW!!! - not once he has developed bad habits and behaviour

I can't help but expect to see another thread within the next few weeks asking for help with a completely out of control puppy <sigh> :(

Check out trials and agility classes in your area too as this would be a great place to channel his energy once he's ready to do this sort of work. First and foremost though, get him to the vets for a puppy check and first course of vaccinations. You don't mention how old he is but he sounds very young still so difficult to advise any further without more information.

Just out of interest, in what way did you "rescue" this pup?

  • I dunno Chameleon, this person is experienced with GSDs which were originally herding dogs too.

However, I know very little about huntaways - I guess your best bet is to see if there is much breed info on the internet, however, its hard to know whther he will be more GSD in temprement or more huntaway - crosses can take after either parent in looks or temprement.

True, and I guess I was a little harsh in my reply especially having now read the other thread the OP referred to. Please accept my apologies :o

My only concern, again having read the other thread, is that this pup is only 6 weeks old which is far too young to be rehomed, but obviously we don't yet know the circumstances surrounding why it was "rescued". My guess is that the owners didn't want a litter of pups around the place over the xmas period so have palmed them off to anyone who would take them now, but who knows

ETA: This might be a useful site to look at for more info about the breed ...

Oh, just to warn you they are very vocal dogs and do bark ... A LOT!!!! :D

  • cheers Chameleon, I know we do get a bit cynical on here (I do anyway) from seeing so many people get ill considered pups, however I do think if anyone can deal with an active breed it will be the op who appears to have 2 gsds and a collie!!

This one should fit well into the doggy mayhem!

6 weeks old! This seems to be really common at the moment and is not good!! what a shame for the pup.

thanks for advice, we did read up about the breed was just wondering if anyone on here had experience of them, was re homed because the owners had been killed in a car crash, really very sad,and the parents of the people couldnt take all of the dogs, they took the parents, and their bros an sis took some of the pups we had 1 a friend of ours had another the local vets had the last 1.Our gsd do agility, little snoop troops up behind them trying also, he fetches an carrys things we have got him weeing on paper been doing that since the 2nd day of us having him.He lets us no if wants a poo,has alot of energy which is ok no more than the gsd's have has a teddy that takes to bed with him has his mums sent on it, i took a towel with the sent of our dogs on so he would be fermilar(cant spell that soz) with thier smell, the teddy i took i rubbed over his mum an dad so he had thier sent also.
I really would not of gotten the pup if i didnt think we wouldnt be able to look after him give him all the love he could poss get, and train him we have been soczlizing him with lots of people since day one, all he wants is loves an kisses from them,(even likes the postie lol)
He only yaps cant call it bark when he is playing with the gsd's,been given full bill of health from the vets, an had his jabs on fri, he will be done when he is older as our gsd's have been, too many dogs out thier without homes or being badly treated.I know bout the barking our eldest gsd used to be a !!!!!! for it only when people was behind our garden she is better now only barks once used voice command treated when didnt bark, ignored when did she soon clicked on if i bark dont get a biscuit,am hoping if this little fella doesnt bark.He will have plenty of walks, kids not allowed to take them out on thier own only because we have some total KN.bs in our town that have huge dogs that think its funny to let thier dogs to chase an rag other dogs, dont do it when hubby or i take them out.We had halti collars at the begining for them stoped them pulling, will have to put 1 of them back on as she is ok going out,but pulls like a steam train comming home :rotfl:
I am a very lucky person to have such a fantastic fam we have had such a sh*t time this year with my mum dying 2 of our dogs, a friend, then going bankrupt, and i have animals that i will have fantstic lives..

please believe me this young pup will be treated well loved very much, will be trianed have already started as i said got him weeing on paper straight away, will sit when told to even shakes hands when kids say hi five,he goes on the lead aroundthe garden didnt like it 1st an 2nd time enjoys it now,I wont let snoop down anymore than i have any of my other pets
    thank you all
    take care

  • It sounds like he will have a smashing home with you - its great that you do agility, when I googled huntaway x gsd it appears that a few of them are already involved in agility, so I bet it wuld suit him down to the ground!

I dont think they are a common breed n the UK, although I have seen a few huntaways on rescue sites,

    good luck with him,

    fc :-)

Huntaways are known to be working machines and certainly purebred ones would not be suitable for the average pet home. Of course, being a crossbreed, it is difficult to say without knowing the dog how much of the huntaway working drive this individual may have inherited. However, I would find him a 'job' to do such as agility when old enough (hips status and general and health permitting bearing in mind the GSD element of his make up) or obedience. He will need a lot of mental stimulation to counteract him developing his own outlets for his mental and physical energy but I guess GSDs are like that too to some extent so shouldn't be a problem for you.

Also, clicker training would probably be something to explore with him if you haven't already as it encourages dogs to think for themsleves. You may be able to find a class in your area but this site is also a really good resource: http://www.clickersolutions.com/

Good luck with him. I think Huntaways are fabulous dogs but far too highly driven for me (and I grew up with farm bred Border Collies!)

Again I must apologise to you Debs for my earlier comments and judging you without finding out more about your circumstances. Well done for talking this poor liitle fella in, but what a horrible reason you needed to though :(

I agree with FC, your home sounds perfect and I wish you all the best with him xx :A

OH Chameleon (lovely name) i didnt take it in a bad way you come across as a careing animal lover,i should of explained why we had him wasnt a knee jerk reaction to us losing ours,i will say tho has helped middle son not crying every day now.I felt this little fella needed a home for life, he desearved it,i helped him, and the parents of the couple that died we will keep in touch with them as they asked if we would, we even went to the funeral didnt no them but did it out of respect for thier families.
Have 3 clickers in the house, hes getting it slowly a click is a treat so with a lot of love an training doesnt happen over night always on going he will get there,he goes and gets the letters of the postie, an takes them to hubby in a round about way gets thier in the end doesnt chew the letters touch wood seems to like carrying things maybe that could be his job? eldest gs comes to tell me if phone is ringing if i dont hear it, youngest gsd oh she's clever goes to the window tells me if my mil is comming to the door so i can hide if i want :rotfl: good dog lol
    thank you all for replying
