Buy the magazines and see which one you like more? Why would you subscribe to a magazine you've never read?!

Don't know about Biomed Scientist but if you're a student with an athens password and have internet access at home you can access all the New Scientist articles etc... through their website for free.

Actually, I would recommend Focus as well. It's more general interest science for the public, whereas New Scientist is geared more towards actual science-y people, but Focus is always a good read.
  • I find that New Scientist doesn't contain that much science. I know many people that agree with me. I prefer Chemistry World as it is much more focussed to what I'm interested in. You are probably better off subscribing to Biomedical Scientist as this gives you membership of your professional body too.

It appears you can get one years free student membership so try it out for free and see if you like it.
  • I haven't read the latter so can't really comment but New Scientist I felt was reporting on news which wasn't the latest and I'd seen many of the stories somewhere else a few weeks/months beforehand.
  • If you are studying biomedical science the articles in the biomedical scientist are quite relevant, and the associate membership ensures you get relevant issues through the post on a regular basis as well as some journals and a nifty diary and membership card at some point all for free if you get your tutor to sign your form. There has been nothing much of relevance in the New scientist for BMS in the past year and you can usually get that information else where if it is relevant to your field. It is more for keeping up with other science subject fields of interest and is usually available from the library anyway.
  • Buy neither and go to your local library and read them there.
    Buy for value not cost.

  • The 'Biomedical Scientist' is a professional magazine aimed at Health Professions Council registered Biomedical Scientists (BMS). Unless you are a BMS or planning on becoming one I don't think it'd be much use to you if you're just interested in 'science'. Many BMSs only use it to find relevant jobs (but that can be done free here now www.careerscene.com anyway). In my opinion it's very expensive for what they offer. With the proposed changes through 'modernising scientific careers' coming into effect soon it's quite likely that the IBMS will be no more in a few years anyway. See http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Consultations/Liveconsultations/DH_091137 for the future of healthcare science!!
