    Just a quick thought, bildanto.

If tapping the F8 key during the boot up process still doesn't get you to safe mode try tapping the F5 key during boot up. Just a few times I have found some users say the F5 key works for them when F8 fails.

Or stick some printed off Safe Mode screen on yer monitor. :o

    Sorry just a joke....

Yep maybe F5 as PCHM says. :D

Easiest way to boot into safe mode is

    run

    Type msconfig and click ok

    Go to Boot.ini

    Tick safeboot

    Ok

    Reboot

    Straight into safe mode

When finished just go back into msconfig and untick the safeboot, reboot back to normal

Thanks everyone for your input .... am busy downloading all the software so that I can start and clean up my computer ...

Another question ... how do I back into normal Windows mode from safe mode ... it says by reversing my steps ... I take it that is by switching off my computer and restarting and pressing the F8 button again?? again apologies for another daft question Mandy

keaskin ... please don't tag your question on the back of other ongoing issues. No matter how similar. It confuses everything for all concerned.

Please move your question to a fresh topic in the techie forum and we'll help you from there.

I just want to post a Big Thank You to all who gave their time and knowledge in helping me get rid of the spyware in my machine which was causing havoc. It has taken me until today to clear my machine (fingers crossed) but I would not have had a clue without the help you have all given. I am sorry that I asked basic questions ie how to boot into safe mode but I am sure there must be others who have little or no idea about where to start so thought I would ask. I naively thought that my Panda anti virus would take care of everything for me I didn't realise that spyware would still get through and I should download separate things for its removal but at least I know now. Thanks again, I have some serious shopping to catch up on now ..... Mandy

Just thought I'd jump in quickly to prevent you spending your money unnecessarily.

No need to buy anything to keep your PC safe (unless you actually want to). There's plenty of good stuff around free .... antivirus, firewall, spyware detection/prevention and so on.

Try this for a start. It's a good guide in plain English written by Miscosoft MVP Steamwiz.

I have everything mentioned here fully installed and it all works well for me.

I expect there is similar advice on MSE too but I'll leave it to others more familiar with this site to tell you where that is!

    All the best.

Thanks for the advice re downloading things for free but this morning I renewed 12 months Panda anti virus subscription for £41 and have spent the last 5 hours downloading and installing it (I'm on dial-up). I have such a basic knowledge of computers I wanted some peace of mind so to me this is a small price to pay but I shall look through your link and keep looking on the forum and next year I may decide to go for the freebies out there.

All the help/info is much appreciated, Mandy
